A Rosary will be said for Hugh Gallagher, 85, a Virginia City resident, at 7 p.m. today at Walton's Funeral Home, 875 W. Second Street in Reno. A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary In the Mountains Catholic Church in Virginia City. Burial will take place at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery in Reno at 10 a.m. on Monday.
Mr. Gallagher died May 16, 2006, at home. He was born in 1920 in Virginia City and graduated from Virginia City High School in 1938.
He graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno's College of Education in 1942. He was a lifetime member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.
He was a teacher and coach for the Storey County School District, and was the first superintendent of Storey County schools for 24 years. He was an advocate of education for children and children's athletics.
He served in the armed forces from 1942-46.
He was a 30-year active member of the Storey County Volunteer Fire Department, a 55-year member of the American Legion and a charter member of the Virginia City Hall of Fame.
Among his survivors are his wife of 62 years, Lola Mae McCarthy; sons Hugh Gallagher and Bob Gallagher; daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Joe de Arrieta; one grandchild, two great-grandchildren and numerous extended- family members.
