United Blood Services holds Memorial Day picnic


United Blood Services will honor blood donors and veterans Monday with a Memorial Day Picnic at the United Blood Services office. During this month, donate and enter to win one of several prizes, including a one-night stay at Harrah's Tahoe.

Local cemetery to honor fallen heroes


Lone Mountain Cemetery will be holding a service for Memorial Day at 1 p.m. Monday to honor fallen servicemen.


Volunteers will gather at the cemetery to place a flag on each veteran's grave at 4 p.m. Friday.


Families who wish to put a flag on a veteran's grave who was not buried in the Veterans Cemetery can get a flag between 4 and 5 p.m. Friday.


At 8 a.m., the NJROTC will post the colors at half-mast and then the colors for the services. At noon, the Marines will raise the colors to full-mast and there will be a ceremony. At 4 p.m. Monday, the flags will be removed from the graves.

Mental Health Center opens doors to public


In honor of Mental Health Month in May, the Carson Mental Health Center will be holding an open house from 3-5 p.m. Friday at 1665 Old Hot Springs Road Suite 150 in Carson City. There will be refreshments.

Local candidate holds fundraising raffle


A fundraising raffle to benefit Mark Krueger for justice of the peace will take place from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Comma Coffee in downtown Carson City. There will be entertainment by Moonlight Express and hundreds of dollars in prizes. Raffle winners need not be present to attend. There will be wine, beer, coffee and food available. Comma Coffee is at 312 N. Carson St.

Virginia City


Memorial Day weekend parade celebrates heroes


The Comstock will honor retired Col. Roger Peard, USMC, age 80, the grand marshal of the Virginia City Celebration of Heroes Parade down C Street at noon Saturday.


Peard is a combat veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars.


Veterans groups, clowns, horse groups, musical groups, theater groups, antique cars will parade down C Street.

Country club holds charity day for breast cancer


The Arrow Creek Country Club will be holding its Second Annual Charity Day Event on Sunday to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Arnie's Army Prostate Cancer Foundation.
