(Staff report) - Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., recently urged veterans to watch their bank statements, credit card statements and other documents for evidence of identity theft.
He issued the notice in the wake of the announcement by the Veterans Affairs Department that personal information, including Social Security numbers, of more than 26 million veterans has been stolen.
"At this point, there is no evidence that the data has been used illegally," Gibbons said.
But he cautioned veterans to keep a close eye on their financial statements to make sure they don't become victims.
He said further information is at www.firstgov.gov/veteransinfo or by calling 1-800-333-4636.
