Galena soccer girls go for threepeat
Staff Reports
RENO - The Galena High girls soccer team is getting it chance to shoot for a threepeat in the Northern 4A Tournament.
Galena, the two-time defending tournament champion, earned its shot Wednesday evening thanks to a 3-1 triumph against McQueen in the semifinals on artificial turf at Damonte Ranch High.
The Grizzlies (12-3-3) face unbeaten Reed (14-0-2) in a matchup between High Desert League rivals Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Damonte Ranch. Reed defeated Galena 3-0 in the next-to-last game of the regular season to clinch the league championship.
"We've had an uphill climb, but the girls have worked very hard to get here," coach Ron Jones said. "I thought our kids played a strong game of soccer tonight. They were well composed, played good fundamental soccer, protected the ball well and created good opportunities."
Teya Rapp scored first and Libby Walker added another goal to give Galena a 2-0 lead. McQueen cut the deficit to 2-1 before halftime. After the intermission, Galena picked up some breathing room when Colleen Kern scored off a corner kick to make it 3-1.
That was ample support for a solid Galena defense that was led by senior sweeper Amy Leggett.
"Our back line has been strong all year," Jones said. "This was just another great team effort."
The Northern 4A boys championship game will be played at noon Saturday at Damonte Ranch.
