District measure passes

Carson High School will receive it's track.

The $25 million bond measure for improvements throughout the Carson City School District overwhelmingly passed on Tuesday. Unofficial results had 63 percent of Carson City voters approving the measure while 37 percent voted against it. Out of 17,746 votes, the bond passed 11,185-6,561.

Part of the money from the bond measure will go to improving athletic facilities at CHS. The top priorities will be to refurbish the all-weather track at the CHS football stadium and to also improve the drainage.

The high school track has fallen into such disrepair that the Carson High boys and girls track teams could no longer use the facility for home meets. The track teams could no longer host the Carson Invitational, which was the major fund-raiser for the program.

Another meet traditionally held at the track, the Tah-Neva League Middle School Championships hasn't been held there as well.

Among the problems has been the drainage, which has caused water damage to the track. Just how much can be done after the track and drainage is fixed depends on if the track has to be raised, said CHS principal Fred Perdomo.

If the track doesn't have to be raised, other projects could be done, including refurbishing the football stadium's bleachers and replacing the football field's natural grass with field turf.

Once the track is refurbished, it should be ready for use again in 2008. Carson track coach Todd Ackerman said once the track is repaired, CHS will likely be in line to host the Nevada State Track Championships. Northern Nevada will host the state track meet in 2008, so with its refurbished track, CHS could be in line to host the state event as soon as that year.
