Lyon school trustee wins despite withdrawal

Despite withdrawing several weeks ago, Anthony Corrales was surprisingly re-elected to the Lyon County School Trustee District II on Tuesday.

Corrales won the race with 6,577 votes (56.16 percent), while his opponent, Joseph Slabbinck received 5,135 votes (43.84 percent). The incumbent pulled out too late for his name to be removed from the ballot, but later endorsed Slabbinck. Corrales couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday.

Lyon County Clerk Nikki Bryan has said that if Corrales won, despite his intention to withdraw, he would have to formally resign and then the school board would appoint a board member to serve until the next election in 2008.

Slabbinck said he is still interested in serving on the school board.

"Assuming he (Corrales) really does step down, I would probably file a request to fill the position," Slabbinck said.

He added that he believes Corrales won despite his announced withdrawal because the incumbent was better-known and had children in the schools, helping him to get to know parents.

In the District 4 school board race, Charles Shirley received 6,710 votes (54.73 percent), defeating Lynda Nickerson, who received 5,551 votes (45.27 percent).

Jason McLean will be the next Lyon County public administrator after defeating Franklin Roller with 8,075 votes (69.18 percent) to 3,597 votes (30.82 percent).

In the contest for public administrator, Jason McLean led Franklin Roller 4,008 votes (67 percent) to 1,972 (33 percent).

For the Walker River Justice of the Peace office, Michael Fletcher defeated incumbent Dennis Milligan 1,938 votes (53.2 percent) to 1,705 votes (46.8 percent).

In the contentious Silver Springs GID race, the top vote-getters for the four seats were newcomers Chrysti Barbee and Robert Wells, with 286 votes and 283 votes respectively, followed by Silver Springs airport co-manager Kay Bennett with 271 votes and incumbent Robert Freeman with 248 votes.

Bennett has had contentious disputes with current board members, including Freeman, over an effluent disposal agreement the GID signed with airport management.
