Fazekas closes in on record

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Nick Fazekas is ready to make another foray into the Nevada basketball record book.

Fazekas, the Pack's 6-11 All American forward enjoyed another outstanding game with 19 points and 18 rebounds in 23rd-ranked Nevada's 75-47 nonconference road win over Oregon State Wednesday night.

The 19 points leaves Fazekas 18 shy of Edgar Jones as the Pack's all-time leading scorer, and barring a minor miracle, the record will be broken on Saturday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Jones sits at 1,877, and Fazekas is currently at 1,860. Jones accomplished his feat in 101 games, and Fazekas just finished his 101st game.

"It will be neat to do it at home, and maybe get a little standing ovation," Fazekas said, smiling "It will be a great feeling.

"You never envision something like this. For me to have a chance, it's definitely a big accomplishment. You come in (as a freshman) and look at something like that, and realize that that's a lot of points. You see a record and that's not supposed to be broken."

But it will be, and it will cement Fazekas as arguably the best player in Nevada history. No doubt you will see his jersey hanging from the rafters in a couple of years.

Teammate Ramon Sessions, who rooms with Fazekas, didn't know he was that close.

"I'm happy to see him getting that," Sessions said. "Hopefully it will happen soon."

Barring a really bad night, it should happen sometime Saturday, and certainly it's a record that Sessions has had a big hand in since he's been one of the guys making an effort to get Fazekas the ball the last three years.

Fazekas has now scored in double figures in 86 of his 101 games as a Wolf Pack player, and he has 44 career double-doubles.

The 18 rebounds was the most by Fazekas since a game against Louisiana Tech last year, and he moved past Alex Boyd into the No. 3 spot all time. Boyd had 924 in his career, and Fazekas is at 928.

Fox managed to get 10 of his 13 players in the game, and eight played double-digit minutes.

Freshmen Brandon Fields and Tyrone Hanson only played three minutes apiece, and Richie Phillips, Curry Lynch and Matt LaGrone didn't play.

NOTABLES

The 29 points by Kemp was the most since he scored 34 in the NCAA loss to Montana ... Kyle Shiloh played a sound floor game with six points, five assists, a blocked shot and a steal ... Denis Ikovlev has started both regular-season games, and he finished with five points and five rebounds ... Poor Oregon State. The Beavers hit the road for three straight against Hawai'i, Northern Colorado and Montana State. Not exactly what you want after being blown out at home.

Nevada hosts Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Nevada will bring in a 10-game home winning streak dating back to last year.

Nevada is 46-5 at Lawlor since the start of the 2003-04 season, including a 17-1 mark a year ago. Going back to the 1983-84 season, Nevada is an impressive 249-91.
