Fox still trying to find his rotation

RENO - Nevada coach Mark Fox said he is nowhere close to establishing a rotation.

Fox used all 13 players in Saturday's 82-63 win over the University of Arkansas- Pine Bluff, and 11 played double-digit minutes.

"I have no idea what our rotation is," Fox said. "The kids have to play in a real game so we can get a read on what they can do and what they can't do."

Fox went on to say the substitution patterns are based more on matchups, and could change from game to game.

The third-year head coach got a lengthy look at his younger players in the second half. Arkansas-Pine Bluff cut into Nevada's lead, but veteran point guards Kyle Shiloh and Ramon Sessions held things together.

"I wanted to give them extended minutes, so they could make mistakes and learn to play through them," Fox said. "They all had their moments. They are so young and have so much to learn. This year we are younger than we've ever been."

A SOARING MISS

Freshman Brandon Fields thrilled the Lawlor crowd when he exploded to the rim in the second half for a dunk.

One problem. The ball bounced off the back rim.

Fields, who scored his first five points of the season, was asked in the post-game press conference how bad he wanted that dunk.

"Pretty bad," Fields said, which drew a smile from Fazekas, who obviously enjoyed the freshman's discomfort.

"I would have liked to seen it go in," Fox said. "Hopefully he'll learn that a layup counts the same. He was a little more aggressive tonight, which I want him to be."

HEALY DOES RADIO

The radio broadcast was delayed because of a conflict with the football game at Louisiana Tech.

Dan Gustin, who normally does the home basketball games, was with the football team. Chris Healy, a Nevada graduate who does the Bishop Manogue football games, stepped in.

"The last time I did radio, both Edgar (Jones) and I were juniors," Healy said. "I did a few TV games in the 80s. I haven't done radio since 1978.

"I was a little pumped up; have been all week. I had the Manogue game (Friday) and then this."

NOTABLES

Nevada is a plus-58 on the boards after three games. It won the rebound battle against the smaller Golden Lions 44-24. Nevada grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, including five by Fazekas, whose 17 rebounds moved him to within 71 of Edgar Jones, who is No. 2 behind Pete Padgett ... Fazekas went 9 for 11 from the field, moving him to No. 2 in career field goals. He has 682, eight more than Alex Boyd ...Three former Nevada players - Mo Charlo, Kevinn Pinkney and Chad Bell - are all playing in the NBA Developmental League ... Nevada returns to action Tuesday at home against UC Irvine.
