A small explosive device placed in a trash can in Carson High School's Senator Square injured one student when it exploded before the start of school today.

According to Mike Mitchell, director of operations for the Carson City School district, the incident sent debris flying, but was more like a firecracker in a trash can than a bomb.

The injured student complained of stinging eyes and hearing troubles, he said.

The area has been cleaned up and school remains in session. It is being investigated by the Carson City Sheriff's Department.
