Carson girls win final tourney

The Carson High girls golf team appears to be peaking at the right time of the season.

In the final Sierra League Tournament of the year before the Northern 4A Championships, the Senators won their first title of the season at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Carson finished with a 514 to easily outdistance Reno High, which finished with a 542.

Reno was playing without its No. 2 golfer, but even if the Huskies had their No. 2 player, they still would have been hard pressed to beat Carson. "It would have been really close," Carson coach Terry Gingell said.

The Huskies won the first five tournaments while Carson took second four times and finished third the other time in the five previous events. Michelle Kop fired a 93 to take second in the individual standings while Lydia Peri shot a 96 to take fourth for Carson. Also for the Senators, Sarah Metcalf shot a 100, Chelsea Keating fired a 109, Julia Lapham shot a 116 and freshman Erica Newlin, playing in her first event, fired a 139.

Gingell said Kop had her "best round of the year by far. Lydia played a decent round. That was a good score.

"It's actually quite a tough golf course. A lot of players had higher than normal scores. The girls played very well."

Lapham, in her second tournament, took six strokes off her score from last week. "She did very well," Gingell said. "She's actually hitting the ball very well."

Gingell said if Lapham can improve her chips and putts, she can take 10 strokes off of her score.

He also said Newlin showed potential. "I think she will be a good player in the future," Gingell said.

The Northern 4A event will be held Monday and Tuesday at Wolf Run Golf Club. "I think they're starting to put it all together," Gingell said. "We'll see how it goes."
