Community reaches out to children

I really love that the community uses this column in not only getting information out to the public, but also how they see what is needed and step up to help.

The Elks Lodge is sponsoring an Emblem Breakfast. Proceeds go to nursing scholarships at Western Nevada Community College and to hearing-impaired programs.

I think it's outstanding that they saw a need within our community and are making the effort as a club to sponsor them.

Bring a friend or someone who never gets out who would enjoy a good old-fashioned breakfast.

The following week there will be two days of shopping, food and fun with the Emblem Fantasy Faire to raise money for scholarships.

While you're there, enjoy a "down home" supper with homemade chili and all the fixings.

There will be handmade gifts, jewelry, collectibles and antiques - something for everyone.

Both these events sound fun, and your money will go to some great causes.

Chris Bayer, of Court Appointed Special Advocates, always keeps me on my toes. He sent me an e-mail about the organization that provides advocates for abused children.

So many times these children are temporarily removed and placed in foster care situations. The CASA Web site says it all: "We need more foster and adoptive homes in Carson City so that we can keep Carson City children in Carson City when they have been taken into care during a child welfare case.

"It is bad enough that children are abused and neglected. But to then see these children leave their community - and the school that has become their second home - because we do not have adequate foster homes in Carson City, well ... that falls to all of us working together."

Strong words and amazing passion. If you think you would like to help, I have listed contact information below, along with upcoming training.

Make a difference in a child's life. Call and help. It wasn't too long ago that someone made one phone call and saved four children. You can make the same difference.

We all have driven by 200 N. Stewart St. and have seen the "coming soon" sign out front for a couple of months, but I have a date finally for the soft opening of the new wine tasting establishment, D'vine Wine.

When you come check it out on Nevada Day, you can help the children by bringing in a warm winter jacket.

Owner Kim Donner will be collecting and donating new and gently used coats and jackets to children at Volunteers of America Shelter, Advocates to End Domestic Violence Shelter, CCSD Homeless Program as well as for children placed in foster care.

This is a good way to help children and check out the new place.

Donations Accepted: New and good condition winter coats and jackets for children. Mittens, gloves and hats also accepted.
