Senator boys soccer rolls to a win

The Carson High boys soccer team had no trouble keeping sole possession of first in the Sierra League with a 7-0 win at Damonte Ranch on Wednesday.

Carson (12-1, 9-1) scored in the first four minutes when Zach Weismann scored on a header off of Enrique Mendoza's corner kick. The Senators scored two minutes later when Christian Volker scored off of a pass from Weismann.

Seven minutes later, a Damonte defender was forced to use his hand to prevent a shot from Mendoza from heading into the goal. The Damonte defender was given a red card for an intentional hand violation and the Mustangs had to play a man down the rest of the game. Volker scored on the penalty kick.

Drew Good later centered a ball and Micah Laack took a shot, but was unable to score. But Laack was able to score off of the rebound. Adam Updegrove then scored off of a pass from Laack to give Carson a 5-0 halftime lead.

Carson scored on a Damonte own goal and Updegrove scored on a pass from Good in the second half. Goalies Brandon Briggs and Ryan Lee combined to post the shutout as Damonte took just one shot.

"The effort's there," Carson coach Jason Koop said. "We have some work to do as far as cleaning things up."

Carson next plays at North Valleys on Saturday.

DOUGLAS 6, NORTH VALLEYS 1

Oscar Gonzalez scored four goals and Michael Gransbery scored the other two for Douglas (12-4-1, 6-4). Gransbery is closing in on the state 4A single season scoring record of 31 goals as he has 27 on the year.

Michael Barnes had three assists and Eddie Vega had an assist as Douglas outshot North Valleys 14-4. North Valleys avoided the shutout when it scored late in the game.

Edgar Arceo, Jeff Crozier, Brian Jaggard and Geoff Rahe were among other standouts for Douglas. Goalie Jose Alcaraz posted the win.

The Tigers picked up another big win in the playoff race which became more wide open thanks to Hug's 3-2 win over Reno on Wednesday.
