Cobler and Lewis make it to state

The Carson High boys tennis program entered into territory it hasn't been to in a long time when Brad Cobler and Bryt Lewis qualified for the NIAA 4A State Championships in doubles.

Cobler and Lewis beat a team from Reno High 6-4, 6-2 in the third place match on Saturday the Reno's Plumas Tennis Center.

The third place finish qualified them for next week's state championships.

"We've been playing good doubles the past few years," said Carson coach Pat Houlihan about the program's growth.

"I'm excited to see the kids take it to state. We're thrilled. I'm just proud for the whole program and proud for Bryt and Brad."

"They just played very well," Houlihan also said about the third place match. "They just took over."

In the semifinals, Lewis and Cobler lost to Galena's Gavin Deller and Matt Archer 1-6, 3-6. "They played well," said Houlihan about his team.

Deller and Archer went on to win the title when the won 6-7 (5-7) 6-3, 6-3 in the finals.

Galena's Chris Schwartz and Collin Davis ended up playing each other in the third place match for a state berth with Schwartz winning 6-4, 6-0. Collin Davis lost to Reno's Jeffrey Mullen in the semifinals 1-6, 5-7 while Schwartz lost to South Tahoe's James Roberts 0-6, 0-6. Roberts beat Mullen for the title, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

Galena's Sierra Leeder fell short in her bid to make state, losing to South Tahoe's Maria Long 6-7 (3-7) 2-6 in the semifinals and then losing to McQueen's Elisabeth Buck 4-6, 5-7 in the third place match.

Long went on to win the girls title, giving South Tahoe a sweep of the boys and girls singles crowns. She beat Reno's Andrea Palosaari 6-2, 6-3 in the finals.
