Gold's Gym coming to Indian Hills

Fresh from opening new fitness centers in Sparks and Reno, the company developing Gold's Gym in Northern Nevada has its sights on northern Douglas County.

Westfit LLC, which holds the area development rights for Gold's, plans a 12,000-square-foot fitness center at Clear Creek Plaza, just across the Douglas County line at the south edge of Carson City.

The company expects the center to be open by Jan. 1, said Brad Kloss, owner of Westfit.

Unlike the 34,000-square-foot center the company launched on Longley Lane in Reno a year ago or its 45,000-square-foot center recently opened on Disc Drive in Sparks, the Carson City operation is envisioned as an express workout center.

It will include fitness equipment, classes and children's programming, said Kloss, but won't include the swimming pools, basketball courts and other facilities of larger Gold's Gym locations.

Like the Reno and Sparks locations, the Carson City fitness center will look to make ties with the community.

The grand opening of the Sparks location a few days ago, for instance, included fundraisers for the Boys & Girls Club, Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Make-A-Wish Foundation and other groups.

"We want to be a part of the community, instead of being apart from it," said Kloss.

The Gold's Gym location at Carson City would employ about 25, he said. That will bring the company's total employment in the region to about 100.
