Carson boys soccer wins league crown

The Carson High boys soccer team clinched the Sierra League title with a 6-0 win over Wooster on Saturday at CHS.

"I was happy for our seniors," said Carson coach Jason Koop, whose team 15-1 and 12-1 in league. The Senators finish at Reno High on Monday and Koop said he wants his team to keep its momentum going. "Looking forward to Reno and regionals," Koop said.

Wooster left nine players back on defense and used just one forward, but Carson was still able to break through in the first five minutes Micah Laack crossed a ball that bounced off the goalie. Zach Weismann scored on the rebound.

"They decided to come out and try to attack us and it opended it up for us," Koop said.

Laack went on to score on an assist from Mats Boehnke and the Carson scored its next two goals off of corner kicks by Drew Good. Weismann and Jason Mather both scored on headers off of Good's corner kicks.

Carson took a 5-0 halftime lead when Enrique Mendoza scored off of Weismann's free kick. Koop called his team's effort in the first half the best half it has played this year.

Alex Kaskie finished the scoring on an assist by Adam Updegrove. Goalie Brandon Briggs posted the shutout. "I thought we played really well," Koop said. "We're rolling along."

DOUGLAS 2, RENO 1

Douglas, which has secured fourth in the Sierra League and a berth in the Northern 4A playoffs, gave itself a shot at third with the win over Reno High at home. The Tigers improved to 8-5 in league while Reno fell to 8-4-1. If Carson wins at Reno and Douglas wins at Wooster on Monday, the Tigers will finish third.

"All we can do is worry about ourselves," Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. "We've still got to continue the momentum."

Michael Barnes scored the winning goal in the second half off of an assist from Michael Gransbery on a play set up by Oscar Gonzalez. It was Gonzalez, who crossed the ball and Gransbery was there to direct the ball to Barnes, who put it in.

Douglas fell behind 1-0 in the first minute after Reno took advantage of a defensive mistake. But Eddie Vega took advantage of a short kick by Reno's goalie and was there to send in a shot from 30 yards to force a 1-1 halftime tie.

Among those who Vasquez praised for their effort were Ross Gardner, Edgar Arceo and Vega. Jose Alcaraz posted three saves.

"I think we controlled 75 percent of the possession," Vasquez said. "We came out with a lot of emotion. We played well a lot of intensity."

DOUGLAS JVS 1, RENO 0

Douglas (10-3-1, 8-3) can finish in second in league with a win at Wooster. Ben Wood scored the game's only goal on a penalty kick.

Goalie Corbin Zumpf posted the shutout. Among those who Vasquez praised for their effort were Fabian Ramos, Brian Randall, Wood, David Henie, Cole Kline and Nick Hales.
