BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): Starting to slow down with the cooler weather and full moon, last weekend. Some limits at Upper Blue with Power Bait, off the bottom.
CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Doug Busey of Douglas County reported that camping at Caples Lake is now restricted to established campgrounds, due to the litter and trash left by informal camping along the shores of the lake.
CARSON RIVERS, CALIF: West Carson River: Dave Kirby reported that Cort Harner of Carson City caught a 5.5 pound rainbow and a 6.5 pound rainbow on Salmon eggs on Sept. 5. Excellent Fall conditions for the water. Fly fishermen doing very well in early evenings with Elk hair Caddis or Parachute Adams flies.
CONVICT LAKE, CALIF: The Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260): Big fish were a 6.14 pound rainbow on a nightcrawler at the inlet, a 5.12 pound rainbow on a nightcrawler at the inlet and a 3.90 pound rainbow on rainbow Power Bait from the south shore.
FEATHER RIVER, CALIF: Dave Jacobs/Hank Mautz (Professional Guide Service) (800-355-3113): Anglers can expect best bite early in the mornings back-bouncing sardine wrapped K-15 or K-16 Kwikfish lures in silver or gold color combos. Look to switch over to roe tipped with a Quickie in hot pink or flame colors, back-bounced or mooched in deeper holes as the sun gets on the water. Most productive water has been from the outlet downstream above Gridley with some good bank fishing opportunities upstream in the low flow section near Oroville. Driftboaters have also reported good fishing in the low flow section of the Feather. Salmon have been averaging 18-22 pounds, with the occasional big 30+ pound salmon being caught. Salmon limits are 3 salmon per person.
FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): Lake temperature is going down and fishing is improving. Troll with a olive, black or rust colored Woolly Bugger fly behind 3-4 colors of lead core line. Fishing at the dam has been good with spinners such as Roostertails and Panther/Martins. Nightcrawlers are working well.
HEENAN LAKE, CALIF: Doug Busey reported that fishing from shore is very difficult due to the week growth around the lake. He saw one raft, a couple of canoes and a whole bunch of "Cheerios" (float tubes) in the clear water.
JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF: Steven Osterman reported: The lakes are recovering from the heavy pressure over the Labor Day weekend. Silver Lake is the best bet for the fly angler. Try black Matukas or black Woolly Buggers on a full sinking line.
LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Missy Swain at Burke's Market at Silver Springs (775-577-2750): We will be closed for October to make some improvements at the store. Diana Richards of Silver Springs caught a Wiper over 5 pounds and a 3.5 pound Wiper on a "lure" while trolling in the Virginia Beach area.
SACRAMENTO RIVER: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448): Water flows are 10,000 CFS.
King Salmon: Fishing for Kings is good, Woodson Bridge area. Catching 2-4 salmon a day. Huge salmon this year, seeing salmon up to 44 pounds already. We will be moving over to the Anderson area this week. All salmon are 20 pounds average. Being caught using Worden's Flatfish lures, T-50's , Chrome, with a sardine wrap. All salmon brought in this weekend were over 30 pounds this week. Jeff Ricker of Gardnerville caught a 43.5 pound King Salmon on August 21, using a Worden's Flatfish lure in the Woodson Bridge area.
LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:
Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462): "Fishing is good! We have been getting our Mackinaw trout early in the morning. I'm tagging and releasing the smaller ones. Through the years, I've tagged about 10,000 Mackinaw. About 1-2 per day get reported as being caught from all over the lake. Some of them get released, again. I've caught and released one Mack a total of 4 times. We have been catching lots of fish, but nothing super big."
TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775) 266-3550: Some good fishing news last weekend. Had about 8 fishermen check in here with limits. One guy in a boat caught and released about 40 fish. They were trolling about 10-12 feet deep with nightcrawlers. The trout are averaging about 1.5 pounds each and there were some nice 2 pounders. Fishing from shore with Roostertail lures was doing OK, also. The water temp is 71 degrees.
TWIN LAKES, CALIF: Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village (760-932-7071): First place in the derby was a 6-pound, 13-ounce rainbow caught by Ken Whitmire of Gardnerville and in second place was a 4-pound, 7-ounce brown on a Mepps spinner by John Valdes of Gardnerville. Woolly Buggers continue to be hot, green, brown or purple. Also green Power Eggs and Power Bait. Nightcrawlers working well from shore.
VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort: Lures for the week were red/gold Buoyant, 503 gold prism Super Duper, silver Little Cleo and a few Rooster Tails (olive, black and Chartreuse). Salmon eggs and worms have been the number bait with Power Worms and tube jigs proving for some great action. Flies doing well have been olive or black/olive Woolly Buggers, green body Mosquitoes, small Adams, yellow Sally's (mostly dry) and the BH gold ribbed Hare's Ear. Morning temps have dropped to the low 40's but T-shirt days are still here as the aspens go into their yellows.
WALKER RIVERS, CALIF: Steven Osterman reported: The flow in the East Walker River is currently 291 CFS. Fishing is good as the fish have been active and feeding well. Stimulators, Caddis or X-Caddis on top. Prince Nymphs, soft hackle Pheasant tails and blood Midges under the surface.
WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: The weather is unbelievably beautiful. The nights have been cool, with temps in the low 30's. We have gotten down to 25 degrees a couple of times, already. The fishing is great. This is the best time of the year to come up here and fish for trout and perch, either from shore or a boat.
