Royce Ring, 25, is a left handed relief pitcher for the New York Mets. As a toddler, Royce lost his father in a tragic motorcycle accident. The support of his devoted mother, Lori, and an extended family has contributed to his success.
After a stellar career at Monte Vista high school in the San Diego area, Royce went on to star for the San Diego State Aztecs. While in college, Ring set Aztec records for saves in a single season - 17, and career saves - 26. In 2001, Royce was selected to compete on the USA National baseball team. In 2002, he was voted to the College All-American baseball team. The Chicago White Sox made Royce their No. 1 draft pick that year.
In 2003, Ring was traded to the New York Mets for Roberto Alomar. A testament to the Mets belief in Royce's potential. After honing his skills at the AAA affiliate Norfolk Tides, the southpaw was called up to the big show in 2005 during the roster expansion period. He started 2006 with Norfolk and set a franchise record by pitching 26 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings from April 19-July 8. His superb effort this season earned him a spot on the New York Mets roster. In two recent relief appearances, Ring has not allowed a run.
The World Series this year may be a New York subway event between the Mets and the Yankees. In that case, Else and Lori may be packing for a trip to the Big Apple. And Royce may be pitching for a World Championship ring.
