It was another case of survival for the Western Nevada Community College women's soccer team in a 0-0 tie against Shasta on Thursday in Redding, Calif.
The Wildcats (1-0-2) were coming off a physical battle in a 0-0 tie against Arizona's Cochise and were involved in another physical battle in 104-degree heat in Redding in a game that began at 4 p.m.
"I think the heat and the humidity kind of outplayed us today," WNCC coach Hillary Arthur said.
"It was a rough battle from the get go. The team definitely put in a 110 percent. The heat really drained us."
Arthur praised the play of her defense. "The defense player the best out of the whole team."
Douglas High's Meghan Olsen was singled out by Arthur for her play at sweeper. Olsen filled in for Dominique Glude, who was out with a fractured wrist. With the proper cast, Arthur said she hopes that Glude can play on Thursday when WNCC plays a rematch at Cochise.
Melissa Goldfin was also out with an ankle injury and Arthur said she hopes Goldfin will be available for Cochise as well. Douglas High's Savannah Gray was also taken down against Shasta.
Arthur said the preliminary diagnosis was a sprained fibula and Gray's status was unknown. "She says she's going to be back ready to play tonight," said Arthur about WNCC's 7 p.m. contest today against Redwoods in Eureka, Calif.
Arthur also praised the play of Carson's Allie Otto at goalie. "Allie did a great job in goal," Arthur said.
WNCC was able to outshoot Shasta, but couldn't take advantage. Arthur said Shasta was a much improved team.
"We just couldn't get the ball into the net," Arthur said. "We just couldn't convert."
Among the leaders on offense was Douglas High's Courtney Lenhart, Arthur said. Arthur also said Douglas High's Alison Pyne, who was recovering from an ankle injury, gave WNCC a lift defensively. "She did great for us," Arthur said. "She came in and lifted the team."
WNCC should receive a break from the weather today as it's likely to be in the low 60s in Eureka.
