The Carson City Library will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a showing Monday afternoon of "9/11."

"I didn't want to pick something political, just something conveying what that day meant for so many across the world," said Andrea Moore, the library's community relations coordinator. "It really captures the heroism, the common humanity caught up in the chaos of that day."

The showing will begin at 3 p.m. in the library's auditorium, 900 N. Roop St.

Brothers Jules and Gedeon Naudet were videotaping a documentary in lower Manhattan about a rookie firefighter when the World Trade Center was targeted for destruction by suicidal hijackers affiliated with the terrorist network al-Queda. Members of that group rammed passenger planes into the twin towers that morning.

Jules Naudet heard a roar in the sky and pointed his camera in that direction. His resulting footage of the first crash is a rarity. The brothers also captured rescue efforts in that tower and scenes of escape shortly before it collapsed.

Among awards the brothers earned for the documentary are an Emmy and a Peabody.

The version shown will be "The Filmmakers' Commemorative Edition."

Moore said public libraries and other organizations across the country were encouraged to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Sept. 11 by hosting events that allow people to freely share ideas and information. Though the library isn't an official participant, the event was inspired by the grassroots organization, The September Project.

Two other planes were hijacked that day: One was flown into the Pentagon, and the other crashed into a field in southwest Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people died in all four planes and on the ground.
