The Carson High girls golf team continues to close the gap on Reno High and by the Northern 4A Tournament, CHS coach Terry Gingell hopes it will be completely filled.
Led by Chelsea Keating, who tied for second with a 91, and Sarah Metcalf, who took fourth with a 93, the Senators had their closest finish to Reno at Rosewood Lakes, finishing 10 strokes behind the Huskies.
Reno won its fourth straight Sierral League Tournament with a 485 and Carson was second at 495. The previous closest finish for Carson to Reno was 15 strokes.
Michelle Kop also had her best score of the year with a 94 and Lydia Peri shot a 99 as the Senators had four golfers finish under 100 in the tough, windy conditions.
"It was real windy," Gingell said. "The conditions were challenging. They played very well."
Keating's score of 91 was her best, beating her previous best of 99 last week. "It was a great performance by her," Gingell said. "I'm pretty proud of Chelsea. She played a smart game out there."
Gingell also praised the play of Metcalf, Kop and Peri. "Sarah's playing very nice," he said.
"She played very steadily," Gingell also said about Kop. About Peri, Gingell said, "She didn't putt that well. She played well, though."
Also for Carson, Melanie Gingell scored 118 and freshman Katie Cowperthwaite, playing in her first tournament, scored 126.
Coach Gingell said he's still looking for a fifth player to shoot close to 100 and said Cowperthwaite may be that player.
"She'll definitely improve," he said. "I think she's going to be a solid player. That's what we need. We need a fifth girl to still improve. We're right there. I'm hoping that we'll challenge Reno by the end of the season when it really counts. It was a pretty strong performance. I'm confident they'll still get better."
The next league tournament will be this Tuesday at Washoe County Golf Course.
