The National Rifle Association and a former Mono County assistant sheriff have endorsed Charlie Duke for Lyon County Sheriff.

Terry Padilla, retired assistant sheriff, wrote in an endorsement letter on behalf of Duke that he has known the former Los Angeles Police Department sergeant for more than 30 years after serving together with the LAPD.

"Charlie is a modern-day law enforcement professional with a high level of motivation and integrity. Charlie has proven he is not afraid to stand up for what is right, regardless of outside influence," Padilla wrote.

And in a letter signed by the Nevada liaison for the National Rifle Association, Carolyn L. Herbertson congratulates Duke on being endorsed by the group's Political Victory Fund.

"Your strong support of the Second Amendment and working knowledge of the issues surrounding this most important constitutional debate are greatly appreciated," the letter states. "We are pleased to inform you that as an ... endorsed candidate, we will be communicating with our members in your district to let them know of your 'A' rating and endorsement status."

Duke faces Allen Veil in the Nov. 7 election.

Veil is a lieutenant and 17-year veteran of the Lyon County Sheriff's Department.
