The Western Nevada Community College baseball team achieved another first on Saturday when it won a series against the Reno Astros.
After being hammered in the first game of a doubleheader 11-1, the Wildcats came back to win the nightcap 8-4 on Saturday at Moana Stadium. WNCC won two-of-three over the weekend against the Astros and also won the season series 4-3, a vast improvement over last year when the Astros took five of six games.
Kyle Bondurant had eight hits in the series. WNCC scored four runs in the seventh inning in the nightcap to break a 4-4 tie.
Chuck Howard had the go-ahead RBI single with two outs to give WNCC a 5-4 lead. The Wildcats also scored three runs after there were two outs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
Bondurant and Brad Carlsen each had two hits, Logan Parsley had two hits, including an RBI triple, Thomas Miller went 1-for-1 and reached base four times, Pat Grennan and Jason Chapman each had an RBI double and Taylor Meiras doubled. Dan Grubbs was the winning pitcher.
In the opener, former McQueen star James Johnson, who pitched for the Reno Silver Sox this past season, was the winning pitcher. Bondurant was 3-for-4 and Andrew Ferguson, Jeff Young and Chad Walling all added a hit.
WNCC will next play Feather River in a doubleheader on Saturday and Lassen in a doubleheader this Sunday at John L. Harvey Field. Both doubleheaders begin at noon.
