Students take a break this week

As you read this article, students and staff at Carson High School are enjoying their first day of Spring Break! School resumes April 16.

You may have noticed some nervous students during the week of March 26 when many took the Nevada Proficiency Exams. All sophomores took exams in the areas of reading and math, and they piloted the science exam, which will be required for the class of 2010. Juniors and seniors who still need to pass proficiency exams were tested in math, reading, and writing. We had a good turn-out, and we hope to have great results! The next (and last) exam for seniors will be the week of May 14th.

Counselors have been going into the classrooms to prepare students for registration for the 2007-08 school year. Course description books were given to each student, and the actual registration will take place April 17 and 18 for current juniors, April 19 and 20 for current sophomores, and April 26 and 27 for current freshmen. Counselors will go to Carson Middle School on April 30 and May 2; to Eagle Valley Middle School on May 1 and May 3; and to St. Theresa's and Bethlehem Lutheran on May 4. Parents are encouraged to look over the course description book and participate with their son/daughter in course selection. Since classes cannot be changed next fall, it's important that students take care in selecting their classes.

Track, baseball, softball, golf, swimming, and diving all participated in events last week. These athletes work hard to practice and compete in their sport as well as keep their grades up. Carson High athletes traditionally have some of the highest grade point averages in the state.

The Carson City chapter of Soroptimists International recognized several students at Carson High School recently. Girl of the month recognition went to Kristin Charles for December; Ariana Alaniz for January; and Kendra Simms for February. The Soroptomists also awarded the $650 Violet Richardson Award Scholarship to Heidi Flansberg. In other scholarship news, Kristin Larson was selected to receive the Masonic Lodge No. 1's scholarship of $1,000.

More than 80 students from Carson High School are excited about raising money for the American Cancer Society and have formed four Relay for Life Teams. The students are planning a dance-a-thon on May 19 where all of the proceeds will go towards the Relay fundraising. The actual Relay for Life event will take place at Carson High School on July 21 and 22. Some of these students may approach you for pledges - if you are able, please help them in this worthwhile endeavor.

Twenty members of the Carson High School staff have also formed a Relay for Life team. They are planning events, including "Scrapbooking for a Cure," which will be at CHS from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 12 to raise money. A preregistration fee is required.
