Nevada may hope to take 'Knapp' in recruiting

RENO - With only one scholarship left to offer, it figures to be a quiet signing period for the Nevada basketball program.

Nevada coach Mark Fox has only one scholarship left, and one of the players Fox is interested in is 6-9 Wade Knapp, who visted the Reno campus last weekend.

Knapp averaged 11.9 points and 5 rebounds a game last season for Dodge City Community College, helping the Conguistadors to a conference title.

Knapp is the second Dodge City player to be recruited by Fox. The first was sharpshooting guard Todd Okeson, a two-year starter for the Wolf Pack.

Knapp also is being recruited by Bradley and Missouri State. He is going on a recruiting trip to Missouri State this weekend, according to Dodge City coach Brian Hoberecht. The Dodge City coach said approximately 25 schools have recruited Knapp.

"Mark (Fox) and I have a relationship that goes back a few years," Hoberecht said. "Coach Fox has been through here a couple of times this year.

"Wade will probably make a decision shortly after he gets back from Missouri State. He wants to evaluate all his options. He said he enjoyed his visit to Nevada last weekend; meeting all the players and coaches."

Hoberecht said that Knapp has done a good job sifting through offers in an attempt to find the best fit for his style of play.

"I think all three schools are a pretty good fit," Hoberecht said.

Fox could very well have a few more scholarships available before the end of summer.

Ramon Sessions and Marcelus Kemp have hinted interest at exploring the upcoming NBA Draft. They have until mid-June to declare. If either hires an agent, they would be ineligible for further college competition. They could do what Nick Fazekas did - not hire an agent and go through individual workouts and to camps at their own expense.

And, then there are the Johnsons, Demarshay and Armon.

Demarshay Johnson was academically ineligible last year, and used it as a redshirt year. No doubt the 6-9 center-forward is under the gun. If he doesn't make grades this spring, his college career is over. It's not certain whether Armon Johnson, the all-time state scoring leader, has passed the NCAA Clearinghouse. He could still possibly be a partial qualifer and redshirt his first season at Nevada, and earn an extra season like Lyndale Burleson is attempting to do.
