CHS girls track off to a strong start

As expected, the Carson High girls track team dominated the sprints and hurdles on Friday in the first day of the Reed Rotary Invitational.

"We set ourselves up to actually do very well," said Carson coach Todd Ackerman about how his girls team could finish in the final day of the meet today. "It could be a very good day and hopefully it is."

In the 300-meter hurdle finals, Kayla Sanchez and Andrea Keirstead went 1-2 with Sanchez winning in 44.05 seconds and Keirstead taking second in 46.74. Carson also qualified 1-2-4 for today's 100 finals and 1-2-3-5 for the 200 finals.

In the 100, Sanchez qualified first in 12.18, Keirstead qualified second in a season best 12.46 and Brandi Vega qualified fourth in 13.01. In the 200, Sanchez qualified first in 25.22, Keirstead qualified second in 25.98, Vega qualified third in 26.33 and Christy Works qualified fifth in 26.66.

Also for Carson, the boys distance medley relay team of Caleb Carter, Robbie Barlow, Richard Shroy and Chad Shroy was fourth in 11:30. The distance medley relay consists of legs of 400, 800, 1,200 and 1,600.

The girls distance medley relay team of Gloria Sosa, Kendra Krupp, Kat vonRumpf and Jenny Mital was sixth in 14:11. The girls 4x800 team of Sosa, Works, Mital and vonRumpf was sixth in 10:44.

For Carson's frosh-soph boys, James Simmons had a solid race in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 44:30.
