Carson girls track takes second

The Carson High girls track team made a strong statement at the Reed Rotary Invitational on Saturday.

While Carson finished second to Reno High in the event, the Senators can be encouraged by their performance. Reno finished with 110 points while Carson was second with 88 points.

Carson was able to finish as high as it did despite two disqualifications and not fielding a team in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. The Senators are the Northern 4A's No. 1 ranked team in both events.

"We're in position. We're definitely getting a little bit closer all the time to making a serious run at things," said Carson coach Todd Ackerman about his team's effort to win Northern 4A and NIAA 4A State titles. "We're still not at full strength, yet."

Among the Senators missing was Emily Field, who was still out with an injury.

In the 100 meters, Kayla Sanchez won in 12.57 seconds while Andrea Keirstead was second in 12.89 seconds. Brandi Vega also qualified for the finals, but was disqualified due to a false start.

Keirstead won the 200 in 26.25 while Christy Works was third in 27.37. But Sanchez was disqualified due to a false start.

Vega also qualified for the 200 finals, but was unable to compete because of a soccer tournament. Vega's absence was also why Carson didn't compete in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Sanchez won the long jump at 17 feet, 2 inches. Works was third in the 400 in 1:01.91. Works was the top finishing Northern 4A runner in the event, which was won by Smith Valley's Kylee Gleason.

Keirstead was also second in the 100 hurdles at 15.51, finishing behind Hug's Keriana Johnson. In addition, Carson was fourth in the 4x400 relay in 4:19 with Works, Haley Ward, Kendra Krupp and Gloria Sosa.

For the boys, Chad Shroy was fourth in the 1,600 in 4:39, Shephard Darquea was fourth in the pole vault at 12-6, Richard Shroy was seventh in the 3,200 in 10:35 and Carson's boys were sixth in the 4x400 in 3:36.91. For Carson's frosh-soph boys, Zach Mapes was seventh in the 400 at 56.91.
