CHS girls track has another strong effort

The Carson High girls track team turned in another impressive effort at the Chico (Calif.) Invitational on Friday.

At press time, the CHS girls finished either first or second in the event that featured more than 50 schools from Northern California and Northern Nevada. For the boys, Chad Shroy turned in one of the Northern 4A's top times in the 1,600 meters while setting a personal best.

In the meet there were some races in which separate seeded events were held in which the top 12-15 entrants competed. The seeded events were held mostly in the distance races.

Andrea Keirstead and Christy Works were two workhorses for Carson. Keirstead ran two 100s, two 100 hurdles and two 300 hurdles while Works ran 3 400s, two 200s and the 4x100.

In the 100 hurdles, Keirstead was first in 15.20 seconds. Keirstead also won the 300 hurdles in a personal best 45.87.

Kayla Sanchez and Keirstead went 1-2 in the 100 as Sanchez won in 12.51 and Keirstead was second in 12.55. sanchez also ran a 44.33 in the 300 hurdle preliminaries, but opted not to run in the finals because they came right after the 100.

Keirstead and Sanchez also didn't run in the 200 because of the meet schedule. Sanchez was third in the long jump as well at 16 feet, 11 1/2 inches. Works was sixth in the 200 in 27.09 and fourth in the 400 in 1:00.996.

In the open 3,200, Jenny Mital was second in 12:31.89. Julisa Gonzalez, Gloria Sosa, Yvonne Hollett and Works were fifth in the 4x400 relay in 4:15 and Gonzalez, Kelli Brothers, Yvette Hollett and Works were ninth in the 4x100 in 52.00.

For the boys, Shroy was fifth in the seeded 1,600 in 4:25, which is now based on the latest reported results, the second fastest time in the Northern 4A. A Reno High runner finishe second in the event.

Shroy was also third in the open 800 in 2:02.99 and Richard Shroy was second in the open 3,200 in 10:03.
