Dayton teams sweep

DAYTON - Dayton High's baseball team moved into first place in the Northern 3A wioth a doubleheader sweep of Spring Creek Saturday afternoon.

The Dust Devils overcame an error-filled seven-run second inning to win the opener 10-9 on Joe Delaski's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh, and used a six-run second inning to win the nightcap 10-5.

The sweep improved Dayton's record to 18-3 overall and 11-1 in league. Spring Creek dropped to 14-7 and 10--2, respectively.

Dayton trailed 9-7 going into the last of the seventh.

Anthony Onstott (3-for-4, HR, 4 RBI) singled and was sacrificed to second. Brandon Aguilera (2-for-4, RBI) followed with a run-scoring double to make it 9-8. Aguilera advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and then Tommy O'Brien (2-for-4) was walked intentionally. Delaski. who also got credit for the win, followed with his game-winning double.

In the nightcap, Spring Creek led 3-2 going into the last of the third when the Dust Devils erupted for six runs to take an 8-3 lead.

After a walk, Delaski (1x3, HR, 4 RBI) slammed a two-run homer and Onstott (3-for-3, HR, RBI) followed with a solo homer to make it 5-3. Dayton went on to score three more runs in the inning thanks to three walks, two hit batsmen, a sacrifice and a run-scoring single by O'Brien (3-for-3, HR, 4 RBI).

Spring Creek cut the lead to 8-5 in the sixth, but Dayton answered back with two in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring.

Cory Yoder struck out 14 and walked two to earn the win for Dayton.

DAYTON SOFTBALL SWEEPS

Dayton (11-9, 7-5) also swept Spring Creek in softball, winning the opener 7-5 and the nightcap 11-4. Sierra Barnwell went the distance in both games to pick up two wins. In the nightcap she was also 4-for-4 with an RBI and a double while Matia Spencer finished 6-for-7 on the day.

In the opener, Melissa Goetz was 2-for-4 with a run, Breann DeHaven was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, Brittany Hill was 4-for-4 with two runs and Sara Simmons had a hit and an RBI, Nicole Iractabal was 2-for-3 with a double and a run, Spencer went 3-for-3 with a double, run and an RBI and Sara Simmons added a hit and a run.

In the nightcap, Goetz, Burrows and Simmons each had a hit and a run, DeHaven had a hit and three runs, Spencer was 2-for-3, Iractabal had a hit and an RBI and Victoria Hynick scored three runs.
