Cal Lewis continues to have a solid year for the South Dakota State baseball team, which heads into a showdown today with Minnesota.
Lewis, a senior starting third baseman, is hitting .299 with 10 home runs, 31 RBI and a .650 slugging percentage heading into today's game. The Douglas High graduate from Carson City had a solid series last week in a three-game sweep of Northern Colorado.
Lewis hit the go-ahead two-run home run in a 6-3 win and had two hits each in the other two wins as the Jackrabbits won 14-9 and 13-9.
South Dakota State competes as a Division I independent and has posted a solid 20-14 record against a tough schedule. Minnesota comes into today at 26-7 and 9-2 in the Big 10. In the teams' first meeting, Minnesota won 7-6.
Carson-Douglas Rodeo club strong
The Carson-Douglas Rodeo Club had several outstanding efforts at the Nevada High School Rodeo Association event in Battle Mountain.
In Saturday's go-round, Cory Hershkowitz placed second in bareback riding. Hershkowitz has been placing consistently each weekend and sits third in the state standings. The top four after the State Championships will advance to the National High School Finals Rodeo.
Alyce Kugler took second on Saturday and Sunday to win the overall average in girls cutting. Elyse Heberger tied for first in goat tying on Sunday and took 10th in goats on Saturday while Byron Kreck was sixth in boys cutting on Sunday.
