Sanchez runs 42.12 in 300 hurdles

Carson High's Kayla Sanchez posted what is likely one of the nation's top times in the 300-meter hurdles on Wednesday in a three-way meet with Manogue and Elko at Elko.

Sanchez posted a personal best of 42.12 seconds in winning the 300 hurdles. She and Andrea Keirstead warmed up for Saturday's Meet of Champions in Sacramento, which will feature some of the nation's top track stars.

In the team standings, Elko edged Carson's girls 72.5 to 70.5 while Manogue was third with 39 points. In the boys meet, Manogue had 81 points, Elko had 61 points and Carson had 55 points.

While the Senators we're quite at full strength, Carson coach Todd Ackerman said most of his athletes competed in at least three events.

"We still aren't at full strength," Ackerman said. "Some kids did not run all their events. There wasn't a whole lot we didn't run.

"There was a handful that didn't run all of their events. They actually came and competed pretty well and some competed very well."

Sanchez also won the 200 in 25.7 while Brandi Vega was second in 26.54. Carson also had a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 with Sanchez (12.22), Keirstead (12.69) and Vega (12.75). Keirstead also won the 100 hurdles in 15.97 and Sanchez won the long jump at 16 feet, 6 inches.

Julisa Gonzalez, Yvonne Hollett, Gloria Sosa and Christy Works won the 4x400 relay in 4:10 and Vega, Gonzalez, Sosa and Works won the 4x200 in 1:47. Other top finishes for Carson were:

3,200 - Jenny Mital, second, 14:30; 4x100 - second, 53.31; 300 hurdles - Caroline Montiel, fifth; 1,600 - Hollett, third, 5:45, Mital, fifth; 800 - Sosa, second, 2:35, Mital, third, 2:36; Kat vonRumpf, fourth, 2:37; 400 - Gonzalez, second, 1:04, Kendra Krupp, foruth; pole vault - Stephanie Adamson, fourth.

Triple jump - Lisa Midboe, third, Brittany Sly, fourth; long jump - Midboe, third, Catherine Drews, fourth; 4x800 - second, 10:24.

For the boys, Richard Shroy won the 3,200 in 10:30, Chad Shroy won the 800 in 2:04, Shepard Darquea won the pole vault at 13-0, Floyd Hernandez won the 200 in 23.45 and Hernandez, Caleb Carter, Matt Mattoon and Chad Shroy won the 4x400 in 3:34. Other top finishes were:

110 high hurdles - Phillip O'Neil, second, 16.87, James Simmons, third; 4x100 - third, 45.75; 300 hurdles - Mattoon, second, O'Neil, third; 1,600 - Zack Mapes, fourth; 100 - Cash Doty, second; pole vault - Mike Arnold, third, 12-6; discus - Donald Foster, fourth; triple jump - Evan Pearson, second; long jump - Carter, second; 4x200 - second, 1:35.75; 4x800 - third, 8:38.

While Sanchez and Keirstead will be at the Meet of Champions the rest of Carson's track teams will be at Manogue's Silver State Invitational on Saturday.
