CAHI to host celebration
Citizens for Affordable Homes, Inc. (CAHI) will celebrate the completion of eight homes in Dayton at 10 a.m. June 23 at 100 Pine Cone Road announced today June is National Homeownership Month.
Eleven families will be in the building process the first part of July.
The event will provide food and photo opportunities with two very important persons, according to a press release. Call 883-7101.
DHS Class of '97 to meet
Dayton High School class of 1997 will hold a 10-year reunion July 28.
The day includes an afternoon of fun and a picnic and barbecue 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Zephyr Cove Resort. Cost is $10 for the family; bring your own refreshments.
A dinner-dance cruise on the MS Dixie II will be later in the day and is for adults only. Cost is $69. Reservations can be made by calling (775) 589-4908.

Fallon
Play about Rachel Carson in Fallon
"A Sense of Wonder," a play based on the life of writer Rachel Carson and written and performed by Broadway, film and TV actress Kaiulani Lee, is the featured presentation at the 10th Annual Spring Wings Bird Festival in Fallon.
Carson's most famous work, "Silent Spring," exposed the dangers chemical pesticides posed to the natural environment and is credited with launching the environmental movement. May 27 would be Carson 100th birthday.
The play has been at the center of national conferences on conservation, education, journalism and the environment and has been touring the country for more than 10 years.
"A Sense of Wonder" will be performed at the Barkley Theater at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park St., Fallon at 7 p.m. May 11. Tickets are $35 and include hors d'oeuvres after the performance. Call (775) 423-4556.

Travis T. Hipp reminisces on 1970s music scene
Local radio host Travis T. Hipp will give a lecture about Silver City's Fireman's Ball fundraisers and the music scene of 1970s Silver City at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Silver City Firehouse.
Hors' d'oeuvres and wine will be served at this Historic Preservation event
Lecture on fire department offered
Silver City volunteer firefighter and historian Larry Steinberg will give a lecture on the historic town's fire department from 2-4 p.m. May 13 at the Silver City Fire Department on High Street.
The event will include an Epicurean luncheon and a chance to learn about the little-known but impressive history of Silver City Fire Department's work on fires throughout the Comstock area, 1860s to 1960s.
Steinberg will utilize a unique collection of photos, journals and artifacts during the presentation. This lecture is on the State Historic Preservation Office's list of Historic Preservation Month events (www.nevadaculture.org)
Admission is free.
Virginia City
ICS Chili Cookoff on Cinco de Mayo
Virginia City will hold its 25th annual Cinco De Mayo Fiesta and Chili Cookoff on May 5.
Cooking starts at 10 a.m., with tasting at 12:30 p.m. while the chili lasts.
People's Choice chili will be available at 1:30 p.m. with pots located up and down the boardwalk. Tickets for tasting will be sold at 50 cents each, or 12 for $5.00. (With ticket purchase you get a tasting kit)
Take your tickets to the various booths and for each ticket you get a taste of chili. Most tickets received will win the People's Choice award.
First, second and third-place prizes will be awarded in several different categories.
The best cooks can expect to cash in on the $1,500 in prize money for Red ICS Chili, ICS Chili Verde, ICS Salsa and best non-ICS chili.
ICS-sanctioned chili contains no beans. Non-ICS chili must contain beans. Winners will advance to the last chance cook off, with a chance to attend the World Chili Cook-off.
The event will also feature live music by a strolling mariachi band noon-2 p.m., and piñatas for the children will be smashed each hour from noon-4 p.m.
Patsy Cline tribute comes to Piper's
The Jan Short Band will perform a tribute to Patsy Cline and country favorites at Piper's Opera House at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
On Sunday at 2 p.m., the Cochrans will perform cowboy music, magic and comedy.
Cost is $18 per person at the door.
The $18 cost includes tacos, beans and rice in honor of Cinco De Mayo.
