Nevada Peace Officers Memorial set for next week

On Thursday, law enforcement officers from across the state will be in Carson City for the 10th annual Peace Officers Memorial Service.

The service will honor the 101 Nevada peace officers who were killed in the line of duty since 1861.

This year, the name of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sgt. Henry Prendes, a married father of two daughters who was gunned down on Feb. 1, 2006, will be unveiled on the memorial at the Legislative Plaza.

The service will begin with the presentation of colors by the combined Nevada Law Enforcement Office honor guard and the delivery of a baton.

The baton is being carried by peace officers from departments across the state from Las Vegas to Carson City in 101 legs, to represent each officers killed.

The annual Law Enforcement Memorial Run started Thursday. The baton is scheduled to arrive in Carson City on Wednesday, May 2.

Speakers this year will include Gov. Jim Gibbons, Attorney General Catherine Cortez-Masto.

The first officer killed in the line of duty was in 1861 when Carson County Nevada Territory Sheriff John L. Blackburn lost his life while attempting to make an arrest.

Prendes, 37, was the only Nevada officer to die in the line of duty in 2006.
