The Douglas High softball team's bid for second place took somewhat of a shot in a 5-2 loss at Damonte Ranch on Thursday.
Douglas (18-9) fell to 11-5 in the Sierra League while Damonte improved to 13-2. The Tigers, Damonte and Carson (13-5) are all in a three-way race for second in the Sierra League. Damonte's remaining six games are against the league's top three teams in Reno High (one game), Douglas (two games) and Carson (three games).
Teila Irwin went the distance for the win for Damonte while Stephanie Harper went the distance in taking the loss for Douglas.
Harper settled down afer Damonte took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Douglas came back to tie the score 2-2 in the tip of the second when Harper singled. After a sacrifice by Marina Diaz, Mackenzie Cauley and Angella Stephenson singled. Emily Weaver followed with a single to score Harper and Cauley.
Lauren Hoppe went 3-for-4, Weaver and Cauley each had two hits, Harper went 2-for-3 with a double and Donna Judd, Katrina Morgan and Judd each added a hit. Douglas outhit Damonte 13-5, but couldn't take advantage.
