Carson City

Remembrance of atomic bomb set for today

A special observance in remembrance of the anniversary of the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be from 4-5:30 p.m. today at St. Theresa of Avila Church, 3000 N. Lompa Lane.

This event is sponsored by the Life, Peace & Justice Commission of the Diocese of Reno. All are welcome and encouraged to participate.For information, call Father Chuck Durante at 882-1968.

Quintet play at concert

The jazz combo Frank Perry and Friends, a group of five musicians from Northern Nevada, will perform at the "Sunday Concerts in the Park" series at 5 p.m. today at the Legislative Plaza.

Admission is free, and concertgoers are invited to bring lawn chairs and a picnic and enjoy music on the lawn between the Capitol and the Legislative Building.

Band leader is saxophonist Frank Perry, who has played with the big bands of Les Brown, Harry James and Ella Fitzgerald.

He has played with Bob Hope on USO tour, and in Las Vegas and Reno show bands.

Other members of the band are trombonist Dale Hampton, who has played with Charlie Byrd, Bill Potts, and Ralph Marteri; guitarist Lin Phillips, who has played with Herb Ellis and Ed Bickes; drummer Miles Hampton, who has played with Bud Shank and Mose Allison; and the bassist Joe McKenna, a master of many styles.

Teen ice cream social Saturday at Minden library

The Douglas County Public Library in Minden is having an ice cream social 4 p.m. Saturday for participants in the teen summer reading program. Teens should bring their own toppings such as chocolate sauce, cherries, and whipped cream and small (13-ounce) coffee cans with clear lids. Teens must register by Friday to attend. Call 782-9841.

Two artists show at South Lake's Valhalla Hall

Nancy Clarke will offer her oil landscapes and Dee Manning will show her watercolor landscapes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday in the Valhalla Grand Hall in South Lake Tahoe.

Valhalla is three miles north of the "Y," the first right turn after Camp Richardson.

Batmobile on display

Holy exhibition, Batman - It's The Batmobile! The unique Batmobile, made famous in comics, on TV and in movies is in downtown Reno at the National Automobile Museum, the Harrah's Collection, through Dec. 31.

The original Batmobile was designed exclusively for the 1966 hit TV series Batman, staring Adam West and Burt Ward. Don't miss a close up look.

It's a "Topless Exhibit" - but it's OK to bring the kids. National Automobile Museum's Harrah Collection, has gone topless.

Check out the curves on five 1950s convertibles in the Masterpiece Exhibit through Oct. 15.

"Fill 'Er Up & Check The Oils! The Art of Jay Koka" exhibit featuring jaw-dropping automotive art, continues through Oct. 15.

The museum, 10 S. Lake St. and is open daily.
