Dayton

Dance with lessons twice a month

A dance for ages 16 and older, featuring local performers Don and Nadine, will be the first and third Fridays of each month at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St.

Dance lessons will be 8-8:30 p.m. and the dance will go until 10 p.m. Fox-trot, waltz, swing, Latin, country line dance and polka steps will be taught.

Cost is $5 per person, with potluck desserts for the first Friday. The third Friday is a cost of $10 per person with bottled water and snacks provided. Call Denise at 246-6227.

Water-wise gardening taught

A course on water-wise gardening will be taught from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at Dayton State Park.

Local gardeners Wendy Madson and Mickey Clause will recommend plants that will grow well and look great in your garden, especially those that don't need much water and attract birds and butterflies.

Nature activities set for children

Children can take short nature hikes, make crafts and learn about plants and animals in the Dayton State Park as part of the Nature Buddies program Aug. 20, Sept. 17 and Oct. 22.

Listening library pilot program set

The Cultural and Performing Arts for Dayton Area and the Lyon County library system are beginning a pilot program to create a listening library and book drive. The listening library will be made up of CDs and DVDs that feature classical music, both instrumental and vocal, operas, jazz, big band and musical theater.

Dayton Valley final soccer sign-ups

Final Dayton Valley soccer sign-ups will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Smith's Market in Dayton.

Cost is $25 for returning spring players and $65 for first-time player, which includes new uniform and soccer ball. All players receive team and individual pictures, players insurance, end- of-the-season award. Call 246-0707

Rural tourism summit planned

Rural Summit 2007, Developing Rural Nevada's Future through Leadership, will be Aug. 28-30 at the Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way. 'Carousel' auditions scheduled

Western Nevada College in Fallon hosts auditions for the Broadway musical "Carousel" at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29-30, at the Churchill County High School Theater. The production will take to the stage 7 p.m. Nov. 8Ð10 and Nov. 15Ð17.

Anyone interested in auditioning must attend one of the pre-audition workshops at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 27, or Aug. 28, at the high school theater. Callbacks will follow Aug. 31, and the cast announcement will be posted at the WNC Fallon campus. Children's roles will also be available, with auditions open to anyone who is at least 12 years old by Aug. 30.

All selected cast members who are high school juniors and older must enroll in WNC's Musical Theater Practicum. This class meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 4-Nov. 17. Cost: $176.25. High school sophomores and younger must enroll in WNC's College for Kids class. Cost: $75.

Gold Hill

'Much Ado About Nothing' at gazebo

Shakespeare on the Rocks makes a return to Gold Hill as the Gold Hill Theater Troupe and the Nevada Shakespeare Company present "Much Ado About Nothing."

The play will be performed in the Gold Hill Gazebo Theater, across Highway 342 from the historic hotel. The play stars actors from Gold Hill, Virginia City, Carson City and Dayton.

Curtain times are 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and Aug. 16-18 and Aug. 23-25. Seats are $28; reserved $37. Call 847-0111.

Virginia City

Barbecue cooks, ice cream makers sought

Virginia City is looking for barbecue masters and ice cream aficionados to complete in "Chillin' and Grillin' on the Comstock," a summer food festival, beginning at noon Aug. 18.

There is no entry fee for either event.

The ice cream competition will be in the Bucket of Blood parking lot with a creator's meeting at 9 a.m. Ice cream can be homemade or store-bought. Tasting will begin at noon. Prizes will be given for winning creations. Craft vendors and nonprofit vendors are welcome. Call 847-4768 for information.

The barbecuing will be done along C Street, in front of local businesses. Cooks can barbecue anything they like. A gas grill is required because of fire danger. For information on the barbecue, call 847-9016.

Firefighters hold golf tournament

The Storey County Volunteer Fire Department and the Fire Fighters Association are holding a "Tee It Up 4 Kids" golf tournament at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 25 at Empire Ranch Golf Course in Carson City.

This tournament was started in 2001 to raise funds for the Storey County Volunteer Fire Department's annual Children's Christmas Party in Virginia City. New toys are distributed to children from infants to fifth-graders in Storey County.

In 2005, the VFD teamed up with Storey County Firefighters Association to raise funds for the community assistance program.

Comstock plans pet parade

The 2nd annual Virginia City Pet Parade will be Aug. 25 in Virginia City. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Visitors Center, 86 S. C St. The line-up will be at 11:30 a.m. and the parade starts noon. The entry fee is by donation.

Civil War re-enactment on Labor Day weekend

The Comstock Civil War Re-Enactors will put on its annual Labor Day weekend encampment and battles Sept. 1-3 in Virginia City.

Battles with cannon and troops will take place at 1:20 and 3 p.m. on the train.

A Civil War-era ball will be 7 p.m. Sept. 1 in the Delta Saloon parking lot. The cost is $3.

A luncheon and formal tea party will be at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 2, upstairs at the Delta Saloon.

The Civil War Moonlight wine train leaves the V&T railroad station at 7 p.m.

On Sept. 3, the annual Virginia City Labor Day Parade will be at noon down C Street and will feature many of the re-enactors as well as other familiar Virginia City characters and local groups. Following the parade, at about 12:30-1 p.m. in the middle of "C" Street will be the "Battle for Virginia City."

Yerington

Trail walk & run to benefit spay & neuter program

The 12th running or walking of the Tahoe Trails and Tails to benefit the Yerington Animal Protection Society's spay/neuter project will be on Aug. 26 at Spooner Lake State Park.

There will be a 10K run, a 5K run and a two-mile walk. Late registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the races beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The Carson City Sheriff's Search and Rescue will be on hand to help and will share in the proceeds.
