Lamborn wins at Meridian

In one of the best races featuring the American Speed Association/Western States Supermodified Racing League, Meridian Speedway race fans witnessed a grueling and exciting race involving two of Northern Nevada's best teams.

Saturday's 50-lap main event featured Kirk Wartman of Boise, Idaho, driving for Courtney Lewis of Reno on the pole, and Carson City's Dale Lamborn on the outside of the front row. DNA Racing's Eric Silsby and Amy Barnes of Minden, and S&S Motorsports of Carson City did not make the show.

At the drop of the green, Wartman and Lamborn battled for several laps, each striving for the lead in side by side action, with Lamborn finally getting the pass on Wartman for the lead and taking it to the checkered flag at the end.

"We banged and fought over real estate for the lead from the start," Lamborn said. "It took me five or six laps to get around him (Wartman). "It was a great race. Real exciting."

With Lamborn taking the win, Wartman followed close behind in second and the series' 2006 Rookie of the Year, Martin McKeefery, was third. Rounding out the field were: Rick Veenstra, Jeff Russell, Ernie Coppo, and several sprint cars from the Meridian Speedway filling in the field.

"We did have a little bit of a battle," Lewis said of his driver, Wartman, and Lamborn. "We were loose coming off the corners.

"We could run even with Dale, but dropped just a bit coming off the turns. We are very happy with the car. We have made great gains with the car. I'm just tickled."

"Getting a second, a third and a win in the last three races is just great," Lamborn said. "I can't be happier with how well we have done."

Lamborn was seventh-fast time in qualifying and won his heat race; Wartman was eighth-fast and finished second in his heat. With Regier, who was first in the points race not making the show along with Jim Birges, who was second, the point standings for the top-four are now: McKeefery, Wartman, Lamborn and Regier.

S&S Motorsports and DNA Racing are anticipating competing in the league's next race, which is September 15 at Madera Speedway in Madera, Calif.
