Lanes set to do it again

Their first card under the Let's Get It On promotional banner - July 6 in an outdoor parking lot at the Eldorado Hotel and Casino - was an unalloyed success for Terry and Tommy Lane. Now Mills Lane's sons are hoping that repetition equals success.

In speaking about the brothers' next card - Oct. 20 in the Grand Exposition Ballroom in the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino - the 24-year-old Terry said Monday he and Tommy were going to apply the same formula that sold out their first show in Reno.

"We want to make the card affordable and give the ticket buyer more than one reason to go," Terry said. "We want to have a consequential main-event fight, bring in local fighters, get their stories out there and get the fans emotionally involved. It worked last time."

Although the Lanes have yet to find him a dance partner, Terry said that popular Yerington super middleweight Jesse Brinkley is once again their choice for their main-event fighter.

On July 6, the 30-year-old Brinkley, 28-5 with 19 knockouts, stopped Dallas Vargas, of Toledo, Ohio, in an all-out slugfest for his second win in three weeks. Lane said Brinkley's choice for an opponent - Joey Spina, who stopped Brinkley in the 11th round of their 2006 fight - has been difficult if not impossible to talk into the rematch.

"Spina won't fight Jesse on October 20," Lane said. "He said maybe sometime next year. But if Jesse wins, the less likely that will happen. There's a little chess game going on."

Although he didn't feel comfortable announcing his name publicly just yet, Lane did say he is negotiating with a former top-flight, well-known, all-action super middleweight who is looking to make a comeback. But there is a sticking point.

"He's asking for a lot of money," Lane said of the would-be opponent. "If he commits and if Jesse and (his trainer) Peter Manfredo Sr. are OK with it, so are we."

Brinkley is sure to draw enough fans from Yerington, Reno and all points in between to fill the Grand Exposition Ballroom, which Lane said seats between 1,700-1,800 fans, but he feels confident that his and Tommy's only signed fighters - McDermitt's Derek and Tyler Hinkey - would also draw a good part of the crowd.

The 27-year-old Derek is 3-0 - all by knockout - and coming off a second-round technical knockout of Jovanni Rubio and 24-year-old heavyweight Tyler won his first pro fight with a first-round stoppage of Dan Evensen. Both bouts were on the July 6 show.

The brothers, both of whom hail from the McDermitt Indian Reservation, have been training in Las Vegas with Kenny Adams, who among many others trained Ray Mercer as an Olympian and WBO heavyweight champion.

"He's doing a great job," Lane said of Adams. "Derek (who fought as a super middleweight his first three fights) can make 161 - middleweight - easy. And Tyler (who fought at 272 against Evans) is down to 260. He'll try and make 250 by the end of September. He's made a lot of progress. Kenny's happy with him."

While Tyler is noted for his heavy hands, Derek is remarkable because of his hand and foot speed, not to mention his sharp, powerful punches.

Lane said he is hoping to bring in two other local fighters for the Oct. 20 show - Carson City lightweight Mike Peralta and Reno junior welterweight Jaime Rodriguez.

The 25-year-old Peralta improved to 2-2 (1) with a second-round stoppage of Pernell Jackson, while the 21-year-old Rodriguez, 3-2 (2), overcame an injured elbow to stop former two-time New York Golden Gloves champion Shavaris Buie on the July 6 card.

Lane said that popular flyweight Glenn "The Filipino Bomber" Donaire has agreed to appear on the show if Spina rejects Lane's offer of a tune-up fight as the co-main event of the show.

In 2006, Donaire, 16-3-1 (9), lost a six-round technical decision to then IBF flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan, suffering a broken jaw. His younger brother, Nonito Donaire, recently avenged Glenn, upsetting the highly regarded Armenian/Australian by stopping him in the fifth round to win the world title.

"We have a good relationship with both Glenn and Nonito," Lane said. "We hope to work with both of them in the future."

Lane said he is considering offers from other promoters - including Tony Holden and Crown Boxing (in Las Vegas) - to have the Hinkeys fight on one of their cards in September and return the favor by bringing in those promoters' fighters for the Reno card.

Lane has also taken in consideration that the Nevada football team will play at Utah State on Oct. 20 but, since it's a 12:05 game, fans that aren't on the road would have plenty of time to make it downtown for a night of boxing.

After the July 6 card, Terry Lane said a sold-out smaller venue makes for a more intimate, big-fight feel. He and Tommy are hoping that will once again be the case on Oct. 20.
