Lyon County Babe Ruth baseball holds fall sign-ups

Lyon County boys and girls between the ages 12-15 can sign up for fall baseball by calling Korey Farnworth at 450-9124.

The cost is $40 per player. Players get to keep their jersey and hat.

Practice starts first week of September. Games run through the end of October. The Dayton team will be playing teams from Carson City, Reno, South Lake Tahoe, and Gardnerville.

Dance lessons offered twice a month

A dance for ages 16 and older, featuring local performers Don and Nadine, will be the first and third Fridays of each month at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St.

Dance lessons will be 8-8:30 p.m. and the dance will go until 10 p.m. Fox-trot, waltz, swing, Latin, country line dance and polka steps will be taught.

Cost is $5 per person, with potluck desserts for the first Friday. The third Friday is a cost of $10 per person with bottled water and snacks provided. Call Denise at 246-6227.

Donation drive for library set

A donation drive for the Listening Library at the Dayton Valley Branch Library will be from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 8.

The emphasis is mainly on all forms of classical music and music theater.

Donations can be monetary or in the form of compact discs or DVDs that feature classical (instrumental and vocal), opera, ballet, jazz, big band, musical theater and Native American music.

An estate CD collection of 90 works has already been donated but many more are needed to satisfy the diverse tastes of Dayton residents.

The Cultural and Performing Arts Committee for the Dayton area in cooperation with the Lyon County Library System has initiated a pilot program to create a classical music collection of CDs and DVDs at the Dayton Valley Branch Library.

Plans on for 19th Dayton Valley Days

The 19th annual Dayton Valley Days celebration in historic downtown Dayton Sept. 15-16 will feature even more fun family fun this year.

The theme this year is "Travel Back to Old Dayton" recognizing The Dayton Station, Dayton's rail depot, along with various forms of transportation from the past used in Dayton. The Grand Marshals will be the Minor Family and Grace Ricci.

David John and the Comstock Cowboys will perform in two special dinner shows at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with steak and all the fixings. Admission to the street fair is free; cost of the dinner show is $25 each, and purchasing two tickets gets a third ticket free. Call 246-1630 for tickets.

Cal Eilrich will put on a fast-draw show, and there will be the annual parade, concerts and food, the Gold Creek Show and Shine car show, train rides, silent auction and more.

Crafters, antique dealers, food vendors and a large variety of other booths will line historic Pike Street.

All proceeds will benefit Lyon County Sheriff's Search and Rescue and the preservation of historic downtown Dayton.

Virginia City

Civil War re-enactment happens this weekend

The Comstock Civil War Re-Enactors will put on their annual Labor Day weekend encampment and battles Saturday through Monday in Virginia City.

Battles with cannon and troops will take place at 1:20 p.m. and 3 p.m. on the train.

A Civil War-era ball will be 7 p.m. Saturday in the Delta Saloon parking lot. The cost is $3.

A luncheon and formal tea party will be at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, upstairs at the Delta Saloon.

The Civil War Moonlight wine train leaves the V&T railroad station at 7 p.m.

On Monday, the annual Virginia City Labor Day Parade will be at noon down C Street and will feature many of the re-enactors as well as other familiar Virginia City characters and local groups.

Following the parade, at about 12:30-1 p.m. in the middle of "C" Street will be the "Battle for Virginia City."

Labor Day Parade happens on Monday

Virginia City will host its annual Labor Day Parade at noon on Monday.

The Comstock will salute its favorite workers - bartenders - with local Washoe Club bartender Wilson serving as grand marshal.

Lineup will be at 11 a.m. at the Fourth Ward School. The parade will feature the Comstock Civil War Re-enactors, the United Auto Workers and other unions, veterans groups, equestrian groups and more.

The Comstock Civil War Re-enactors will also hold their annual Labor Day Encampment at Miner's Park and Civil War Battle on C Street after the parade.

Include your name, address, telephone number and a brief description of your entry for the parade announcers. To be part of the advance lineup, entries must be received by Saturday. However, late entries are still welcome and will be placed at the end of the parade.

After the parade there will be live music in most local saloons; the train and trolley will be running and the museums will be open.

Highlanders to perform at Piper's

The Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band will kickoff its "Back To Scotland" fundraising tour with a concert at Virginia City's Piper's Opera House at 2 p.m. Sept. 8.

Also appearing are the Sierra Highlanders Dancers and Tinker's Dam. The latter is a ceilidh Ð or Celtic party Ð band made up of members of the Sierra Highlanders playing a wide variety of instruments including guitar, tin whistle, and bodhran, the traditional drum of Ireland.

This will be the Sierra Highlanders' fourth appearance at the historic venue.

The Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band is launching an effort to return to Glasgow, Scotland, to compete in the 2008 Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association's World Pipe Band Championship. The band placed 12th last year in the competition.

Part of the proceeds from the sale of tickets will benefit Piper's Opera House, which is operated by a nonprofit foundation restoring the building.

Camels are back on the Comstock

Camels, ostriches and emus will be racing again in Virginia City as the historic mining town presents the International Camel Races, Sept. 6 through Sept. 9 in Virginia City.

General Admission is $10; VIP tickets are $35; Family Pack is $25; juniors, seniors, military $8.

The fun will begin Thursday evening at 6 p.m. with the traditional Jockey Party at the Union Brewery Saloon at 63 North C St.

Friday will feature the Media Races, where members of local media will race against one another for bragging rights and fun. Gates open at 1 p.m. and races begin at 1:30 p.m. all three days.

Friday evening folks can get dressed up in their best for the Camel Hump Ball and silent auction at the new Long Branch Saloon on North C Street.

Proceeds benefit the Eagle Valley Children's Home.

On Saturday, the festivities will begin at noon with the Grand Parade down C Street, featuring the camels, many floats and marchers, hot rods, llamas, and the Equestrian Teams.

In the evening there will be live music all over town and fun for the whole family.

On Sunday, the race championships will be held.

Lounge Lizards back at Piper's

For the third time in almost as many years, the Austin Lounge Lizards will rock at Piper's Opera House.

The band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29.
