Shroy and Gordon win titles

Richard Shroy and Amanda Gordon won individual titles to highlight an outstanding effort by the Carson High boys and girls cross country teams at the Douglas Invitational on Friday.

In the meet, runners compete against those just in their grade. Shroy won the sophomore title with the fastest overall time among all the boys, covering the 2.5-mile course in 13 minutes, 29 seconds.

Northern 4A powers Galena and Reno High weren't at the event as they ran in the Nevada Twilight meet at Reno's Rancho San Rafael Park.

Gordon won the freshmen girls race in 17:11. "She beat a lot of boys in her race," Carson coach Pete Sinnott said.

Nick Schlager also had an outstanding effort in the sophomore boys race, taking third. Caleb Carter was fourth in the senior boys race against a tough field, finishing in 14:18. Last year's NIAA 4A State champion in the 1,600, North Valleys' Rene Rangel won the senior boys race.

Another highlight came when Jenny Mital took second in the junior girls race in 16:31. "She had a great race," Sinnott said. Sinnott also said Mital is "just on the verge of making a big breakthrough."

For the junior boys, Wade Smith was third in 14:35, Zack Mapes was fifth in 15:04, David McMasters was 13th in 15:31 and Taylor Phillips had a solid race as well for Carson. For the senior boys, Ethan Draper was 14th and Tyler Davies was 27th.

For the freshmen boys, Brent Moyle, who was second in the Tah-Neva League last year, was third, and Logan Philippi, who won the Tah-Neva title last year, was fourth. In addition, Evan Richards was seventh and Brandon Bone was 17th for Carson.

"The freshmen had a really good outing," Sinnott said. "Logan Philippi went out a little too fast. They all ran fast. The boys ahd a pretty good overall outing. They ran strong as a team."

For the senior girls, Christy Works finished in 17:08 and Gloria Sosa also had an outstanding race. Carson's girls weren't at full strength. Among those who didn't compete was Carson's top runner, Yvonne Hollett.

But Carson will be at full strength for this Friday's Reed Invitational, which will be a measuring stick for where it stands. All of the top schools will be at Reed, including Galena and Reno.
