NHS adopting families; BAC cooking up a fundraiser

Carson High School National Honor Society provides support throughout the year to assists many organizations in our community. When it comes to Christmas, NHS sponsor Angila Golik makes sure they help families within the Carson City School District who are in need.

This year, NHS is adopting six families who have been identified by the Kids in Transition Program as living in poverty, many of them living in hotels.

Golik's motivation is contagious, and her students jump right in. The families requested items such as shoes, car seats, a tricycle, diapers and food. The students were very touched by what they provided last year for this special Christmas adoption, but they also know it was because of the financial support from the community. The students again welcome any donation or help you can give to them so they can make Christmas a little brighter for these families. The party is Dec. 15, and they look forward to once again meeting the families and surrounding them in the spirit of giving.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is offering educational award opportunities for local women and girls through three separate awards.

The Violet Richardson Award is offered to girls ages 14-17 who provide volunteer service in their community. If you know of a young lady who has identified a problem in her community or the world and has worked hard to address it and assist in helping others, please nominate her for this award.

The three Women's Opportunity Awards are $500 grants given to a woman who is either a single parent or a head of household who is attempting to re-enter the workplace or improve her skills in order to provide a better life for her family. The Making a Difference Award honors a woman in our community who is making an extraordinary difference in the lives of other women.

John Procaccini says he is personally making the spaghetti, and with a name like that - you can bet it is going to be tasty.
