Wal-Mart is expanding its operation and as a result it is in the process of hiring an additional 200 employees for its massive distribution center in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, to bring the total number of workers at the facility to nearly 600.
The nearly one million square foot distribution center had no trouble getting workers when it opened in August of 2006, because it offered an hourly wage of $14.50 and also $18.50 for certain shifts, which was high wages by local standards.
Wal-Mart has set up a special hiring hot line at 356-5025.
Wells Fargo awards 20 scholarships
Twenty Northern Nevada students received some extra help from the Wells Fargo First Generation Scholarship fund. A $50,000 check was presented to University of Nevada officials during a luncheon with the scholarship winners in November.
In partnership with University of Nevada, Wells Fargo started the First Generation Scholarship fund in 1999 to support students who are the first in their families to attend college.
To earn a Wells Fargo First Generation Scholarship, students must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and participation in school and community activities. Scholarship winners also commit to spending 10 hours a month volunteering in the community.
