The Galena High boys basketball is receiving a taste of another style of play this weekend at the Monterey Trail Tournament in Elk Grove, Calif.
Galena passed its first test against an up tempo, physical style of play as the Grizzlies beat Edison of Stockton, Calif., 88-73 on Friday. Edison came into the game at 4-1 and is considered to be Stockton's top team.
The Grizzlies advanced to today's championship game at 8 p.m. where it will likely play host Monterey Trail, another team that stresses a physical, up tempo style.
Luke Babbitt scored 42 points to lead four players in double figures for Galena. Goose Robinson scored 14 points, Scott Bristol had 12 points and Jake Mansfield added 10 points for the Grizzlies. Mauer also praised the play of Deon Ashley and Garrett Womack off the bench.
Galena (2-2) trailed 19-17 after one quarter, but outscored Edison 32-19 in the second quarter to take a 49-38 halftime lead and control the game.
"You know what they're a very good, physical team," said Galena coach Tom Mauer about Edison. "I enjoyed playing these guys."
Mauer said he looks for more of the same against Monterey Trail. ""(They're) going to be a very, very well matched team," Mauer said.
"They're a physical team. We're going to be challenged becaused they press all over the floor."
