Three to be tried in March in officer assault

A trial has been set for two Placerville brothers and a Carson City woman who allegedly assaulted a state police captain.

William Nattrass, 21; Raymond Nattrass, 17; and Vivian Leman, 28, will be tried over the course of four days before District Judge Bill Maddox. Jury selection is set to begin on March 31.

William Nattrass is charged with attempted murder, battery on a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon and robbery. Leman and Raymond Nattrass are charged with principal to robbery and battery on a peace officer and Raymond Nattrass is additionally charged with using false identification to avoid prosecution for initially giving police the name of his 15-year-old brother, according to court records.

On Nov. 14, Department of Public Safety Capt. P.K. O'Neill went outside of his Nye Lane office when he was told a woman was being assaulted by two men.

Once outside, the trio allegedly attacked O'Neill and wrestled away his handgun. While he struggled with Raymond Nattrass and Leman, William Nattrass allegedly tried to shoot the officer with his duty weapon, but the handgun had the safety engaged.

After the three were arrested, police learned Raymond Nattrass was wanted in California for cutting off an ankle monitor in relation to a juvenile charge there.

Leman and both Nattrass brothers remain in custody in the Carson City Jail.
