Dayton, Galena, Yerington all win

There was no letdown for the Dayton High boys basketball team in a 76-28 win over Incline on Friday at home.

Dayton (20-3, 13-0) was coming off an emotional 58-52 win at Yerington. But there was no hangover from that game as the Dust Devils outscored Incline 20-4 after one quarter, led 41-14 at halftime and 56-20 after three quarters.

"That was great to see especially on senior night with a lot of distractions," said Dayton coach T.W. Cunningham about his team's play. "We came out ready to go. I'm happy with the preparation and the quick start and we executed great."

Rory Torvick scored 15 points, Jacob Jones ahd 13 points and Mike Vincent added 10 points for Dayton, which has already clinched the No. 1 seed into the Northern 3A playoffs.

GALENA 82, MCQUEEN 52

The Galena High boys basketball team overcame a slow start to win at McQueen.

Galena (15-9, 9-0) trailed 16-8 after one quarter, but outscored the Lancers 74-36 over the last three periods.

"We were not patient and we were not getting seconds and thirds," Galena coach Tom Mauer said. "We were not going to the boards to rebound.

Mauer also said McQueen was able to take advantage of that to score in transition.

But Mauer said his team did a much better job of selecting shots and rebounding over the last three quarters which led to stopping McQueen's ability to score in transistion.

"We did an outstanding job of shot selection in the second, third and fourth quarters," Mauer said.

Mauer praised the way his team responded to McQueen's challenge. "That's what I like," he said.

"I like that everybody's battling us because we need that. I can't complain one bit.

Luke Babbitt scored 29 points, Goose Robinson had 14 points, Brice Crook had 13 points and J.D. Peters added 11 points. In addition, Mauer praised the way Crook hit the offensive glass.

YERINGTON 71, FERNLEY 59

The Lions led 34-28 at halftime and gradually pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 16 points. Yerington (20-6) also kept sole possession of second in the Northern 3A at 9-4. Lowry and Spring Creek were both 8-5 going into Friday.

If Yerington wins out it will clinch the No. 2 seed in the Northern 3A playoffs, meaning it would receive a bye and set up another possible showdown with Dayton for the zone title.

Yerington coach Daron Wildermuth was also pleased that his team didn't suffer a letdown after the emotional loss against Dayton.

"Fernley's playing a lot better," Wildermuth said. "They're improving but obviously thank goodness we are, too.

"I was worrying about a letdown and we didn't have a letdown. That was a blessing."

Gary Smith scored 18 points, Marcus Kness had 17 points and James Roberts added 14 points for Yerington. Jake Lavoie scored 14 points, Shawn Arrington had 12 points and Will Wagner added 10 points for Fernley.
