Bulldogs strong in national tourneys

The Carson Bulldog Wrestling Club had four of its members place over the weekend at the Games of Rome National Tournament at Disneyland.

Ricky McDonald went 5-1 to take second, with his only loss to a national champion from Washington. Willy McDonald took fifth and Kyle Sharp and Seth Trivitt placed sixth.

The Bulldogs also sent a contingent of wrestlers to the Louie Pasteur Tournament of Champions qualifier in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The wrestlers came back with three titles and one second place finish.

Finishers for the fourth and fifth graders in the junior high junior varsity ranks were: Sullivan Cauley, first; Nolan Shine, first; Caleb Wold, first. Cole McCarthy took second in the varsity division.

McIntosh named to all-academic team

Douglas High graduate Andy McIntosh has been named to the Western Athletic Conference fall sports All-Academic team.

Athletes who maintain a 3.0 grade point average and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's contests are eligible for all-academic honors. McIntosh, a junior for the University of Nevada football team, has a 3.60 grade point average in pre-business.

Yerington's Murphy wins slopestyle

Yerington's Murphy McRackin came away with top honors during Sunday's Snowbomb's Toyota Sick n' Twisted Freestyle Series slopestyle event at Diamond Peak.

In the men's ski division, McRackin set the bar in his first run with a 31.5 and was the man to beat all day. McRackin walked away with a new pair of Line skis for his efforts.

Ruvalcaba left without opponent

Unless a fighter is a headliner, boxing matches are about as guaranteed as finding a spouse on a blind date.

For the second time in less than two weeks, junior middleweight Simon Ruvalcaba of Carson City is without an opponent for Saturday's card in Philadelphia.

Manuel Guzman of Lancaster, Pa., has pulled out of a four-round bout with Ruvalcaba, 28, because he has fought recently and won't be ready to re-enter the ring on Saturday.

Ruvalcaba (3-7-2) was originally scheduled to meet Justin Hughes of Reno, but Hughes pulled out of the fight because of an undisclosed injury. Ruvalcaba, who is employed in South Lake Tahoe and graduated from South Tahoe High School, hasn't fought since July 2, 2005 in Reno.

"I encountered this at least four times last year, which is what contributed to me not having a single bout in '06," Ruvalcaba said. "It is growing more and more frustrating. I'm just ready to fight. The way I feel, whith all that has built up inside emotionally, I just feel that I'm gonna slaughter somebody whenever I get the opportunity to step through the ropes again.

"Sorry to everyone close to me and the community, which has shown tremendous support for me the last couple of weeks, for putting you all through the political musical chairs that I am being put through in my career."
