As the Capital City traditionally hosts the first major social gathering of the legislative season, again this year we joined with Douglas County, Lyon County and Storey County to co-host a Four-County Legislative Welcome Reception.
The event was held at the Carson Nugget on Tuesday with overwhelming attendance, providing business, community and local government leaders an opportunity to meet with Nevada's legislative delegation and their staffs to recognize not only the delegation's contributions, but to "show off" a bit of our own successes.
This year, 10 exhibits were on display. The variety of the displays reflected the diversity of our area. From anti-meth efforts to skiing in Lake Tahoe, the counties took the opportunity to boast about projects moving forward in their community. Taking a ride on a historic railway to creating a model for master-planned industrial development, it was all there, giving partygoers a real flavor of our region.
The governor, county elected officials, state lawmakers and constitutional officers all were there for a night of introductions and celebration. Promising to keep the speechmaking brief, I invited the other county commission chairs on stage - along with Gov. Jim Gibbons, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, Controller Kim Wallin, with Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio and Speaker of the House Barbara Buckley - all to welcome Nevada's state legislators.
The evening would not have been possible without the financial support from our 30 sponsors from all four counties. Special recognition goes to the Carson Nugget for its commitment to make the event a "first-class" affair. The room was nicely decorated, and the food was extraordinary. The special and elegant touches got attention from everyone.
This event again proves that in Northern Nevada, we know how to work together and the true spirit of regional cooperation lives on. Oh yeah, we also know how to throw one helluva party!
