John Duke Allen

A funeral for John Duke Allen, 78, a Carson City resident, will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saliman Road, with Bishop Mitchell Cohen officiating. Visitation begins at noon.

Mr. Allen died Feb. 8, 2007. He was born April 24, 1928, in Salt Lake City, to Edwin and Dessie Duke Allen.

He married Betty Bokariza on Sept. 6, 1989, in Carson City.

He attended schools in Fresno, Calif., and Heber City, Utah. He later received his bachelor's degree in education from Brigham Young University.

He was a band and general education teacher for 25 years before his retirement. He later worked part-time for the Alpine School District at the Diamond Valley School as a band teacher.

Before moving to Carson City, Mr. Allen lived in Gilroy, Calif.

He was the chorister for his church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was also played in the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra for eight years, and was in the Reno Musicians Union local 368.

He enjoyed playing and recording music, and vintage horns.

Among his survivors are his wife, of Carson City; children Kathleen Spence and Karin Moses, both of Enumclaw, Wash., David J. Allen of West Friendship, Md., Ruth Patronaggio of Carson City, and Stephen R. Allen of Seattle; brother Thomas R. Allen of Tooele, Utah; sisters Jeanne Clawson of Provo, Utah, Marjorie Sutton of Placerville, Calif., Maxine Randrup of Fresno, Calif., and Lucile Cartwright of Logan, Utah; 23 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven nieces and nine nephews.
