Safe, sober grad event is in jeopardy

Volunteers and donations are needed to ensure Dayton graduates have a safe and healthy graduation night at the Sober Graduation Celebration.

Due to a lack of volunteers, the event is at risk of cancellation. Organizers say it drew 98 percent participation from Dayton High graduating seniors last year.

The event is at the Incline Village Recreation Center and offers graduates the chance to party all night with their friends in a safe way - with swimming, a climbing wall, movies, basketball, karaoke, mock casinos and more, all under the watchful eyes of adult organizers and volunteers.

Snacks are available, along with at least $50 in cash or gift certificates, with a lucky few receiving $100 or $500.

Other prizes include microwaves, televisions and stereos, just the things incoming college freshmen need to furnish their dorm rooms.

Healthy Communities Coalition, Central Lyon Youth Connections and Human Services have agreed to help with the organization and fundraising, but they can't to put on the event alone. They will work with high school staff, parents and concerned community leaders to make this great night possible.
