Silver City to honor history of firefighting

Silver City will focus on its history of firefighting during Historic Preservation Month in May.

Lyon Democrats host spaghetti feed

The Lyon County Democratic Central Committee will host a Spaghetti Feed and Dessert Auction 6 p.m. Saturday at the Silver Springs Senior Center.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $7 for ages 6-12 and free for 5 and under.

The committee plans to invite all Democratic presidential contenders for this event. It is also seeking volunteers to help cook, set up, clean up, and provide raffle items.

Karate classes offered for kids

The Lyon County Human Services Recreation Division is offering kids' karate classes 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Silver Springs.

Tuesday classes will be at the Pony Express Room at the Silver Springs Elementary and Silver Stage Middle schools; Wednesday classes will be in the cafeteria.

Cost is $5 per child and $2.50 for an additional child from a family.

Vendors sought for Lyon County Fly-In

The 2007 Lyon County Fly-In is looking for vendors for the 12th annual event on Armed Forces Weekend, May 19-20, at the Silver Springs Lyon County Airport.

Pilots from throughout the West fly in for the day or weekend to showcase the planes many built by hand. Also available will be builders and restorers of military, antique and ultra-light aircraft. Flight demonstrations include fly-bys, rocket displays, model planes, military and antique planes, and a search-and-rescue demonstration by NAS Fallon Search & Rescue.

The fly-In is 8 a.m.-3 p.m., and will begin a pancake breakfast each day, free to pilots who fly in, 7-10 a.m.

Booths for vendors and craftpersons are $100 for a 10-by-10-foot space; the fee is $50 for nonprofit groups.

Hikes to the petroglyphs

There will day hikes to the petroglyphs at Lahontan Reservoir beyond Silver Springs offered March 3 for the Carson City Senior Citizen Center and March 4 for the Sierra Club.

Both hikes are open to the public; voluntary donations are requested by both organizations.

The hikes will be about four miles round trip, with minor elevation changes. Learn some history of the area.

High-clearance/4-wheel-drive vehicles will be needed, or possible ride share. No dogs allowed.

Celebrate the River Day posters sought

Each year, the River Wranglers hosts an event at Fort Churchill State Park that focuses on the environment.

Celebrate the River Day is May 12 at the state park. Organizers are holding a poster contest to promote the event.

All artwork must be submitted by March 2 on an 81Ú2-by-11-inch sheets of white paper.

The art design should be in black or dark gray so as to have more options available for advertising.

Students may use a variety of art media, such as pastels, crayons, charcoal, markers, ink and pencil.

Washoe Club to hold annual Beach Party

The Washoe Club will hold its annual beach party March 3, with dinner at 6 p.m. and Road Daddy performing at 8 p.m.

The party will feature sand on the barroom floor, heaters, beach umbrellas, Ugliest Hawaiian Shirt contest and a bikini contest, and a barbecue dinner.

Advance tickets are the $35 "Barrel Ride," which includes a free shirt, drink and dinner; $20 "Hang 10," which includes dinner and drink; and $8 "Late Takeoff," which includes a free drink.

Gold Hill troupe to hold Albert awards

The Gold Hill Theater Troupe will put on its annual "Albert" awards for performers, writers and directors of plays at the Gold Hill Hotel during the 2006 season Sunday.

The event, to begin at 4 p.m., is a precursor to an Oscar party. Fine dining and appetizers are available while the Oscar telecast is shown on a big-screen TV at 6 p.m. The awards presentation is free without dinner.

Virginia City to host 11 parades in 2007

Virginia City will host 11 parades in 2007, including the St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 17; the Mad Hatter's Easter Parade on April 7; the Celebration of Heroes Parade on May 26; the Fourth of July Parade on July 4; the Labor Day Parade on Sept. 3; the Camel Races Parade on Sept. 8; the Goblin Parade, Halloween on Oct. 31 the Veterans' Day Parade on Nov. 11; and the Christmas Parade of Lights on Dec. 1.

The Virginia City Grand Prix will offer a parade of motorcycles at 4 p.m. April 28. The Virginia City Convention and Tourism Authority will put on a Pet Parade in August.

Testicle Festival set for St. Paddy's Day

The "Gonadologists" start their stoves up March 17, at the 16th annual Mountain Oyster Fry in the Bucket of Blood parking lot

New and experienced cooks will be competing for bragging rights and trophies in several categories using lamb fries flown in from New Zealand.

There a few spots available for anyone who is interested in competing against top-notch chiefs, camp cooks and just plain cooks who are known as and have earned the rights to become "Gonadologists."

Rural housing expert to aid seniors

The Nevada Rural Housing Authority will have a representative at the Fernley Senior Center 2:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday to take applications for the program.

Church to hold Scrap-a-thon

A Scrap-a-thon is planned for March 10 to raise money for Bibles for Africa.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Calvary Chapel of Fernley at 875 Freemont Lane.

The cost is $250 and includes an hourly prize drawing, break-away demonstrations, lunch and a grand prize.

Although some supplies will be provided, participants are encouraged to bring their own materials.

No children under the age of 14 can participate.

Children's theater holding auditions

Fernley Community Partnership Seeking Solutions (COMPASS) Children's Theater is holding auditions for Disney's "Aladdin Jr." 2-4 p.m. Tuesday at Fernley Intermediate School's gym.

The Disney animated hit includes the characters Aladdin, Jasmine and the Genie.

The play will be filled with magic and excitement for the cast and the audience to enjoy.

It includes the musical hits "A Whole New World" and "Friends like Me."

Auditions are open to children ages 5-16. All children who audition will be cast.

Children should be prepared to perform a one-minute song of their choice.
