Limits of king salmon on the Feather River

BISHOP, CALIF. AREA: Gary Olson of the Bishop Creek Resorts (760-873-4484): No report.

Backcountry: Great reports with everything open now, and fishing really good, Bring repellent.

Bishop Creek: A 3-pound, 3-ounce Alpers Rainbow using a Stinger jig. Pautzke's Green Label eggs have been great with light line, floating down the creek. Worms have also been very good.

Intake No 2: Just keeps rolling along with nice limits and some pretty good sizes.

North Lake: Has picked back up, with fishing improving greatly. White jigs on a bobber with a small chunk of mealworm has been great.

South Lake: A 5-pound Alpers Rainbow on a trolled red/gold Thomas Buoyant lure from a pontoon boat.

BISHOP, CALIF. AREA:

Sabrina Lake: Patti Apted of the Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425): The fishing which was pretty darn awesome this week with lots of limits, most coming from the inlets where the angler were using nightcrawlers, Power Bait and Salmon eggs. Trolling the shoreline with worms or flies like a Woolly Bugger or Matuka or trolling deeper with lead core with a red dot frog lure at five colors have snagged quite a few limits. The shore anglers were using Power Bait. A 5.25 pound Alpers rainbow on a gold Rapala lure.

BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): Lousy heat, lousy smoke this last weekend. It's been really quiet. Upper and Lower Blue were both OK, and producing a few fish.

BRIDGEPORT CALIF. AREA: Jim Reid of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707): Fishing is awesome. It is on fire from boats or float tubes, nothing from shore. Mostly, still fishing with nightcrawlers or Power Bait floated off the bottom or flies such as Damsels or Blood Midges. The average size is 16 inches with some 20-24 inchers.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported: Some limits. One guy caught a 2.5 pounder off the dam with Power Bait.

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:

East Carson River: Todd Sodaro and Chad Machado of the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229): The water is dropping a little but it is hanging tough. DF&G will be planting later this week, probably on Thursday. David Lopez of Martinez caught a 4.3 pound rainbow on Salmon eggs on July 7 and Rodney Reynaldo of Gilroy caught a 3 pound rainbow on Power Bait on July 5.

West Carson River: Dave Kirby: Not very many fishermen. The water is extremely low and the fishing is really slow.

CONVICT LAKE, CALIF: Launa Strickland at the Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260): Fishing well this week. The biggest rainbows of the week were a 5-pound, 5-ounce on a nightcrawler from the north shore, a 4-pound, 10-ounce on a nightcrawler from the north shore, a 4-pound, 6-ounce on brown Power Nuggets at the inlet and a 4-pound, 2-ounce on a nightcrawler from the south shore.

CROWLEY LAKE AREA, CALIF: Steve Osterman of Performance Anglers of Mammoth Lakes (760) 924-2181:

Crowley Lake: The north arm of the lake is fishing well and the algae is not as thick as in other areas. Fish in 3-4 feet of water with a Midge Pupa like Stevie's Wonder gray/black under a large dry fly such as a stimulator or Madam X.

Hot Creek: Water flow is 13 CFS. Time for 6X leaders and small flies. Use a dry/dropper combination. Try a yellow Sally on top with a small (size 18-22) Pheasant Tail Nymph or WD-40 as the dropper. Good caddis grab in the afternoon.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF: Dave Jacobs/Hank Mautz (Professional Guide Service) (800-355-3113): Salmon fishing has slowed a bit despite better flows but warm water temps. Best fishing has been from Oroville to Gridley. Angler's casting large No. 6 Blue Fox spinners from the bank around the outlet have caught a few salmon to 30 pounds. Most fish have averaged 12-25 pounds. Professional guide service has had another good week of fishing for salmon on the Feather back bouncing small K-14 or K-16 Kwikfish with a sardine wrap for king salmon to 30 pounds. Harold Caldwell landed limits of king salmon to 22 pounds on July 6th. Al and Jerie Semion of Roseville, Ca. boated limits of salmon to 21 pounds on July 1st.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): Some nice-sized rainbows are being caught from shore at the dam. Float nightcrawlers or use rainbow glitter or orange Power Bait. Trollers are going deep, about 25 feet down with flashers and nightcrawlers. Troll slow early in the morning or just before sunset.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Ed Dillard (Dillard Guided Fishing) (530-832-6394): This week, I did my fishing at Frenchman. Tuesday: 10 fish (1-4:30 p.m.) Thursday: 32 fish (7 a.m. to 2 p.m.) Friday: 10 fish (noon-3 p.m.) The fish are 10-17 inches.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF: Steven Osterman: Current flow in Rush Creek is 18 CFS. Try Pheasant Tail Nymphs, flash back Hares Ears and black ants. The section of stream below U.S. 395 to Mono Lake providing some good dry fly opportunities with Royal Wullf's Sierra Brite Dot's and Elk Hair Caddis. Silver Lake have been the best bet for float tubers. Black Mohair Leeches, olive Matukas and Zonkers. Fish along the ledge parallel to the main road on the west side.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Elmer Bull of Yerington reported he and his family had good action on a late afternoon at Beach No. 6, with live minnows, for some white bass, a couple of wipers and a walleye. The water level is really going down.

LEAVITT LAKE, CALIF: Kelly Smith of Douglas County caught 12 trout on her own hand-tied dry flies last weekend. Her companion, Nate Johnston of Douglas County, got skunked with his hand-tied flies.

MAMMOTH LAKES, CALIF: Steven Osterman: Middle Twin is good with Callibaetis Nymphs, Stevie's Wonder black/silver, Carrie Special's and Doc's Twin Lakes Special. Also try Lake Mary on the east end near the stumps.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF: Steven Osterman:

Upper: Water flow about 107 CFS. Not much different than last week. Above the Benton Crossing Bridge, try San Juan Worms, Glo-Bugs, Pheasant Tails and sparkle Caddis Pupa and cover lots of water. Some surface action with yellow Sallys and yellow Stimulators. The section below the bridge is being stocked weekly with 2,500 pounds of fish. Caddis in the afternoon.

Lower: Water flow is currently 452 CFS. Fishing is pretty tough now due to the high flows.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Dave Jacobs/Hank Mautz (Professional Guide Service) (800-355-3113):

Trout fishing near Redding was very good this past week for wild rainbow trout with many large rainbows to 4 pounds being caught. Multiple hook-ups were common with many double hook-ups side-drifting Glo Bugs. Side-drifting small hand tied Glo Bugs in various egg color patterns proved best early in the mornings. Natural cured roe tipped with a Quickie puffball also scored some great fishing for wild rainbows. Most trout averaged 1-3 pounds with the occasional large bow 4-5 pounds. 20 hook-ups are average with better scores of 30 plus hook-ups possible on good days. Redding to Red Bluff has been most productive water. Angler's back trolling small Hot Shot No. 50's in various color combos have also gotten into some nice rainbows. The 2007 Salmon season opens on July 16th. Salmon counts are up from last year to 1,899 salmon passing through the Red Bluff diversion dam. Daily limits are two salmon per angler per day. Professional guide service will be guiding salmon trips July through December 2007.

SILVER LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported: Some limits.

Stampede Reservoir, CALIF: Andy at The Gilly Sporting Goods Store: Two of us had limits of Kokanee salmon in 2 hours. We were using flashers with a Lollipop Murph's Kokanee Bug, tipped with a kernel of corn. We were 40-50 feet deep by the island and in front of the dam.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552): Starting early and working our butts off to catch fish. We have been trolling 50-250 feet deep. We locate the fish on the fish finder and then troll in a "Figure Eight" pattern, bouncing the bottom. I've been fishing at Cal-Neva, Dollar Point and Sugar Pine Points.

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore: Gene St. Denis: I've been fishing 50-250 feet deep at Ski Run Shelf, Camp Richardson Shelf and Tahoe Keys Shelf. Trolling with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and minnows. Bouncing off the bottom in a serpentine pattern. We caught a 2 pound brown, a 4 pound brown and a 7 pound rainbow, last week.

LAKE TAHOE - East Shore: Gene St. Denis: Cave Rock Landing has been really slow. Once in the while, someone catches something.

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck and Linda Fields at the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550): It's too darn hot. Even the fish don't like it. We had a couple of boats come in, yesterday (Sunday), with limits. One was using worms and the other was using Power Bait.

TRUCKEE RIVER, NEV: Andy at The Gilly Sporting Goods Store: The Truckee is still fishing good. The water flows are slowing down. There is a good Caddis hatch in the evenings. Try yellow Sallys or Stone Flies . Nothing super big, just the normal Truckee River planter size.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:

Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village (760-932-7071): A 6-pound rainbow on a nightcrawler and a 4-pound, 13-ounce rainbow on lime twist Power Bait. 1.5-2 pound stringers coming in on nightcrawlers or Power Bait.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort: Little Virginia fishing slowed during the last week due to the amount of fishermen and the fish taken. Top honors went to Salmon Peach once again, with Pautzke's Green Label taking second. Power Worms in pink was a good bet using No. 14 dry fly hooks instead of a treble with regular Power Bait. Nothing in size came out except for a couple 2-pound browns, and some nice brookies. Big Virginia produced nice limits on Adams Parachute and Gray Hackle Peacock in the southeast corner, as well as worms in the northwest corner. Lots of red/gold Thomas Buoyant lures saw action as well as green Roostertails. Trumbull has a new batch of 4 to 5 inch browns cruising and being nothing more than an irritation, taking everything that hits the water, but it's good to know the browns are turning around in the lake. Salmon eggs, marshmallows and worms have worked most of the week. The backcountry lakes are producing small brooks and a few air stocked bows near the inlets and outlets. Lures, flies and worms are the attraction for the upper reaches of the canyon.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF: Jim Reid:

East Walker: Fishing is still great with dry flies in the mornings, Nymphs during the day, and Caddis in the late afternoon.

West Walker: Good in the canyon near the Town of Walker. Not so good in the Pickle Meadows area.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:

East Walker: Steve Osterman reported: The flow is currently 112 CFS. Prince Nymphs, WD-40's, flashback Pheasant Tails, sparkle Caddis Pupa, Stimulators and Caddis. The drop in water flow has made for tougher fishing.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn, Mark, Rocket and Scott at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: Fishing is still excellent, both from shore or in boats. The perch are running 11 inches and the trout are 16-22 inches. Some guy caught two 10 pound Channel Catfish.
